Games on My Radar (3/3/2011): Ninjato

Today's Games on My Radar will only feature one game, but it looks to be a doozy! This soon to be published game by Crosscut Games (developers of Galactic Emperor), will most certainly be a very popular title when it's released some time later this year. I know I will definitely try to get my hands on a copy as soon as it's available.

Ninjato

Ninjato is a game that came to my attention simply from the name alone. Usually when I see the name of a game that is related to one of my interested I will do a cursory look to see if the title follows the theme of the game or if they just pasted on the title to make the game sound more interesting. This game falls under the former; Ninja theme throughout!

After reading though the very streamlined and easy to follow rules, the basic idea is that each player is a master ninja trying to acquire the most honor by moving around the village to either learn skills of the ninja or attempting to invade houses control by the other clans and taking their guarded treasures. This blurb from the rulebook really sums up the different types of things you'll be able to do:

Quote:
IN THE ROLE OF A MASTER NINJA, each player practices in the dojo, learns esoteric skills from the sensei, raids clan-controlled houses to steal fabulous treasure, influences envoys, spreads rumors in the pavilion, and ultimately tries to become the most legendary ninja of the age.

All of the components fit perfectly into the theme with each player having 3 Shurikens (Throwing Stars) to use for placement in village, many beautiful, hand drawn cards representing all the different people your character will interact with and how strong or sneaky your ninja will be able to be during raids and an amazingly illustrated game board. Everything really keeps the players immersed in the flavor of 12th century Japan. Luckily Ninjato is being published by Z-Man games, so you know the production quality will be top notch. The release date is yet to be determined, but the designer (Adam West) is very active on the BGG forums, so hopefully we'll get updates as it gets closed to being released to the public.

Just to note that whilst Adam West of Crosscut Games has designed this game it's actually being published by Z-Man instead. Something that I think is fantastic for Adam as it will probably drastically increase the market penetration of the game, especially outside of North America.

Yep, I noted that towards the bottom of the post. In my opinion, couldn't have been published by anyone better! The components will definitely be top notch.
