On June 18, 1815, one of the most decisive battles in military history was fought in Belgian fields twenty miles southeast of Brussels. Within a short 100 days, Napoleon, former emperor of France, had returned from exile on the island of Elba, again seized power, quickly assembled an army, and marched to defeat the dispersed British and Prussian armies now preparing to invade France.
Napoleon invaded Belgium on June 15th, defeated the Prussians at the Battle of Ligny on the 16th and after a day of pursuit, faced the British and Dutch army commanded by Wellington. Aided by superb defensive tactics and the timely arrival of Prussian reinforcements, Wellington defeated the French in the great Battle of Waterloo, ending forever the military ambitions of the great Napoleon.

Two or three player game
Napoleon can be played by two or three players. With three, the allied side has two players, one British and one Prussian, and some special rules apply.
Key Differences in the various editions:
1st and 2nd edition had 48 blocks--shorter (60+ min.) play time vs. 3rd edition has 84 blocks--more accurate division level
3rd edition had Blücher, Napoleon, and Wellington leader blocks that give slight combat and movement bonuses
Although units have increased nearly two fold, the 3rd edition map remains same size, leading to overcrowding.
4th edition has 56 blocks and a larger map - play time is usually 90 minutes or less.
History of the Game:
Napoléon was first published in 1974 by Gamma Two Games, a Canadian company located in Vancouver, B.C. That edition sold out twice. In 1977, the game was licensed to Avalon-Hill Game Company of Baltimore, and they produced a 2nd edition of the game. Later, after Avalon-Hill had sadly gone to wargame heaven (1954-1998), Columbia Games published a 3rd edition. This too had several printings and has recently sold out once more. Columbia Games published Napoléon once again in 2013 as a new 4th "five-star" edition.

This Quick Ref is firmly based on the excellent summary by Mark Motley (wmmotley). Again, this is on 1 single side of paper (A4 size) and I've made very few changes to the text. However, in line with my other quick references, I've attempted to put every rule reminder in correct turn order (as this makes it harder to miss a rule whilst playing. Mark has kindly checked my version but please let me know if you spot any errors. v1.1 with losses section amended
I wanted a rules summary to help in teaching the game, so I created this draft. I really like themadpoet's 3rd edition summary, but I don't have his skills (symbols, boxes, brevity!). Please add comments to help me identify errors and omissions. Thanks!
I have designed this chart to help you remember the Fire of each unit in combat. I have add variants that works fine for me: Artillery fire in short always F2 (it simplifies things)and if artillery is alone they suffer attacks by F3.
No shock bonus for cavalry first charge again cavalry , why should they?
I posted these some time ago on the Columbia Games website and with minor revisions am posting them here. They add to both the realism and the depth of the game, in my opinion, with minimal overall changes.
