The first goal of Grand Hex turns it into a connection game similar to Gregory K. van Patten's Obtuse-Y designed in 2003 and described by Cameron Browne in 2005. He wrote in his book "Connection Games: Variations on a Theme":
"Obtuse-Y, suggested by Greg van Patten in 2003, is played on the hex hex board. A player wins by establishing a chain of his pieces connecting at least three sides, such that at least one side from each opposed pair is included in the connection. Obtuse Y is a race game but cannot be drawn." (page 82)
