Description Edit | History

Whistling Death is the third game in J D Webster's WWII Fighting Wings series, developing the earlier Over the Reich and Achtung Spitfire games. Containing 110 scenarios (that's one hundred ten, folks!) ranging from flight training (3), introductory air combat (5), air-to air combat (58), air-to-ground (4), air-naval (32), and mission level (8). It features 40 distinctive aircraft and numerous ship types. The only facet of the war in the Pacific missing from this game is ground support.

6 Hawker Tempest Mk.II
Late war model Radial Engine Tempest. This ADC corrects a typo on the original's engine line which listed it as liquid cooled. New card is correctly labeled as a radial engine. No other changes.

6 Ki.44-IIB Bomber Hunting Tojo
Who doesn't like having a pair of 40mm cannons in their wings to bust those B-24s and B-29s up? Although in this case, it's more like 40mm mortars with abysmal range. Seemed like a good idea, didn't pan out that often. This is Ki.44-IIB model in third edition format, to complement the others I've put out.

6 Ki.44-IIB (Light) Tojo
This was simply the model-IIb "Shoki" with its 40mm cannon removed and their ports faired over. The reduction in weight offered improved climb rates, ceilings and maneuverability. In the on-going battle against the B-29 bombers over Japan, the reduction in firepower of this model was offset by the adoption of intentional "ramming" attacks. Some units also used the lightened version as escorts to other fighters.

5 H6K4 model 23 "Mavis" Combat upgraded Flying Boat
This is the card for the field-modified Mavis flying boats of the 851st Naval Air Group in the South Pacific. After heavy losses, they took it upon themselves to add extra guns and armor in order to improve survivability in 1942. Some loss in performance due to weight increases.

8 Revised N1K2-J Shiden Kai "George" ADC
Replacement for the previous George revision which still had some N gun data accidentally left in the firepower chart which was no longer needed. This is now fixed. This is a revised ADC correcting the cannon armament of the George and adding in the fire-fighting system. The original ADC assumed a late model cannon design that we now know was never fielded. Also addressed are the engine problems the George had - similar to those of the Ki.84 Hayate (Same Engine)

7 H6K4 model 22 "Mavis" Kawanishi Flying Boat
This is the big Type 97 flying boat used for reconnaissance early in the war by the Japanese. There were two counters printed for it in the WD counter sheet. I've finally gotten around to making the ADC. This ADC is for the initial H6K4 model. There were later ones introducing some minor differences.

5 Ki.44-IIc "Tojo" third edition ADC
This was the JAAF's primary single-engine interceptor in 1944 and 1945. Many years ago I did an ADC for this in the Air Power Newsletter. Since then I have collected much better information on the plane. This ADC replaces the old newsletter ADC. The type saw a lot of action in China and in the Philippines and over Japan.
