Alfred Edward Mathew (1831-1874), also known as A. E. Mathew, was an English-born artist who was raised in Ohio. He also worked as a typesetter, a traveling bookseller, and school teacher. He was known for his landscape sketchings. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army with Ohio troops for three years, making topographical maps and views. In November 1866, he moved to Denver where he produced a number of mountain landscape sketches.
It appears that he was the artist who sketched the original sketch for the painting Battle of Stones River also credited to Kurz and Allison. A version of this painting was used as the cover artwork for the game Stones River: Turning Point in Tennessee.
