The son of a U.S. diplomat, Lance McMillan was born in Japan and grew up overseas, living for extended periods in India, Egypt, Greece, and Turkey. After graduating from the University of California Santa Cruz with a bachelor's degree in History, he received a commission in the U.S. Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. During his 25 year career he specialized in Amphibious Operations and Operational Logistics, conducting ten extended afloat deployments to the Eastern Pacific and Indian Oceans which included participating in Operations RESTORE HOPE, DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM, and IRAQI FREEDOM. He also received a master's degree in National Security Affairs and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and was designated a Joint Operations Specialist. Since retirement in 2005 he has focused on community service and other volunteer activities, and worked as an independent boardgame designer and developer for Victory Point Games.
