Russell Powell (c. 1945 - April 4, 2000) was a game designer from Long Beach and Laguna Hills, California. He did research in Egypt for a dissertation in the mid-1970s and later moved to Alabama. He has been described as a "giant of a man" and "incredibly intelligent and gregarious." He founded the International Gamers Association in the fall of 1974.
He was an ex-military man who probably served in the U.S. Navy. It is believed that he wanted to make wargaming something like professional bowling with uniforms, ranks, prizes, and fees.
