I love this game... randomly seeding the resources into the action spaces makes each round's action valuation a bit different each time, which makes each game flow a bit differently... you must try and get points in all areas and lead in points in at least one area to win... love the flow of the game, timing new workers, actions and dying workers together is everything... can't wait for expansions to increase the options even further!

Simply, Amazing. Great game, with a pitch perfect theme. If you want a game that uses it's theme NOT as a gimmick/throw in. Look no farther then "Village". Amazing.

This may well be my favorite Eurogame. I love the blend and variety of planning ahead, worker placement, and resource management. The game also has a really philosophical theme with great aesthetics. And you never know who is going to win until the very end! Brilliant.

One of the best (if not the best) Eurogames I've ever played.
Great theme and feel of the game, with a great deal of strategy.

This is a worker placement game with a twist, eventually your workers (or "family members" as they are called in the rules) will die, which at first made me little sad when I lost some of my workers early in the game. But late in the game (a bit too late in fact) I realized that it can be desireable to have your workers die off early in the game to get them into the village chronicle before the other players (a bit morbid I know, but there is lots of easy points to be obtained that way).

Great game with an interesting mechanic.
Lots of strategies, but you need to do a bit of everything.
I like the way how collecting resources and taking actions is connected.
Some things may seem a bit illogical, but hey, it's a game.
The board looks great and the components are nice.
Fairly easy to teach. Takes some time because of the possibilities, but after the first round (round - not game) everybody knows whats going on.
I've played with 2 and 4 so far, works well either way, it gets much tighter with 4.

I am so impressed with this game! Excellent scalability.

Update 7/20/14: Played this game with 4 today. Previously, we had only played this with 2, and it is EXCELLENT with 2. Of course, it's even better with 4. What a great game. We played with 2 muggles and the Village totally clicked for both of them by the end of the first round, maybe before. On the surface, this is not a gateway game, as its weight and variety of options can be quite daunting for a non-gamer. Interestingly though, it's that same variety that offers new players a good deal of options for strategic planning. You can literally just pick any part of the game, exploit it to the best of your ability, and still feel like your doing well. Plus, the game is not that "tight," even with 4. I felt like I got to do pretty much whatever I wanted. This looseness, if you will, opens the game up and eases the stress for non-gamers. Fantastic game. Can't say enough about how good it is. I never thought it could be a gateway, but I was wrong!

The theme, feel, and experience of this game are hard to match. Turns have a unique feel because the cube color isn't tied to the action area. This makes every round very different and full of interesting choices. The balance to keep family members alive to perform meaningful actions while trying to make their deaths happen at opportune times is very fun. The game is simple to teach and learn, and the components are great.

Of all the games I've played of the "Euro" persuasion, this one is my favorite. Unlike a lot of the prototypical Eurogames, I feel the theme in Village really fits the mechanics and breathes additional life and narrative into the game. In addition to that, the game itself is very, very solid. I love the various routes to victory, and how all of the resources in the game interact with one another on some level. It makes for a very organic and satisfying experience in trying to optimize one's available resources and options.

I also really love the subtle black humor of the game. The game is essentially about having your family toil away their existence in their chosen field, working themselves to death in this medieval village. The ultimate catch being the only ones that really matter are those that are remembered for their work by the rest of the village. Maybe I read too much into it, but I love the sort of cynical reflection the game presents about our own culture and the ways we attribute meaning to our lives, while at the same time being so darned charming and pleasant about it. At first I thought the cutesy art style clashed with the rather morbid theme and mechanics, but now I've grown to think it's perfect. It sort of gives me a Monty Python vibe.

One of my top games. I love it!

Excellent game with deep strategy that rewards both planning ahead and flexibility. It offers many paths to victory, all of which are remarkably well balanced, and give the game plenty of replay value. And with its beautiful artwork and engaging theme, Village is a real home run.

This game is full of tough decisions; there are a lot of things to do in the village, but only so much you can actually accomplish before the game ends. You must always weigh the opportunity cost of choosing one action before another because the action you don't choose might not be there on your next turn. I should mention, however, that this tension is not accomplished in the normal worker placement way. There is no blocking when it comes to placing your workers. Rather there is a set amount of colored cubes in each general area of the board that denote the number of available actions, and these influence cubes double as a form of currency once they are picked up by the players. Once all of the influence cubes are gone from a given area, that area is closed until the next round. The game does offer one workaround to this in a pinch, but it involves spending three of your influence cubes which can be costly.

One of the strategic variables is in Village the length of the game itself, which will depend both on the number of players and on how quickly people run out their clocks and kill their workers. If everyone uses influence cubes to accomplish their tasks, the game can be very long indeed, but if people choose to work their family members harder by using more time, the graves will fill faster and the game will end much sooner. It is worth mentioning that in my experience the game usually lasts about 30-45 minutes per player, so the 75 minutes in the game description is a rather low estimate.

Another thing I like about this game is that the role of luck is kept to an absolute minimum. Most of the variation will come from players responding to one anothers' strategies. The better you can predict your opponents' strategies, the more you can plan ahead for yourself, and in some cases thwart or delay an opponent's plans. The only downside to this is that more experienced players will most likely have a significant advantage over new players, but this is to be expected in a good strategy game.

The only surefire advice I can offer a new player is, perform family actions (grow your family) early and often, and don't let any one player dominate a single area of the board unchallenged.

Super fun "life simulation" game. The mechanic of death is very clever, and really forces you to think what you want each family member (meeple) to be, and who should die first and where. Subtle ways of screwing with other people's plans (especially the "grab two cubes" spots) adds to the fun.

I had my first play of this game last night and I was very impressed. Unlike some Euro-Games this one did not feel like a math problem that I had to figure out in order to win or come close to winning. I tend to be more of a fly by the seat of my pants players and had a very good time playing this game and game in second by 3 points. I want to play this again and even though it is a bit more complex than what I would consider a typical gateway game, I think the theme is good enough I could gateway some players into it.
