The core is still Risk, but it goes a lot faster and the board changing concept is simply awesome. In our first session we played 6 games in a row.

OH SWEET JESUS
HOW DO YOU SLEEVE A STICKER

UPDATE: It's a game! It's an art project! It's a cruel psychological experiment! It's all these things and more... like a roller coaster full of plus-size swimsuit models* it thrills and titillates through the ups and downs. Only three games in and the burning of Earth 12769 already has a unique narrative. And this is without opening any packets. With sticker and Sharpie we have left our mark on this embattled world—the warlords of Thunderia, New Sparta and Sasquatchistan showing themselves to be more than willing to pop nukes in pristine old-growth forests and water the virgin plains with the blood of orphans in order to... to... uh, I used to know the reasons why, but now all I know is hate.

Don't fool yourself—if you're not defacing the hell out of this game you're not even getting 1% of the experience it has to offer. It's like the difference between masturbating to an underwear catalog vs. a threesome with real women. Tell yourself whatever makes you feel better all alone with your anal retentive proclivities, but if you're not putting your mark on it you are not playing the game.

This is, only three games in, among the best gaming experiences I've ever had.

*Or a gaggle of hairless, pouty, male underwear models flopped on a tatty sofa if that's your thing instead.

So dramatic it almost broke up my game group, but that's also what keeps bringing us back for more. We played 20+ games. That's more often than I've managed to play many of my all-time favorites. A roaring success.

Update: sabotage from another Earth unleashed the Do Not Open envelope on our world.

Update 2: Rumbles in the group about playing again. Get a new copy, or keep the old world limping along?

This game is decidedly NOT for everyone. Fortunately for us, it is a near-perfect fit for our group and our overall attitude towards games. We have a group of five that gets together to play this game, and two key observations have been made: one, it's unbelievable that no one has thought to produce a customizable board game before; and two, it was Hasbro that finally did it!

Matt Drake put it best in his follow-up to his original legendary review: "The surprises that matter are not the ones Hasbro dreamed up. The surprises are the ones you'll create yourself." As great as the surprises in the packets are, what really matters is what you do with them, and the lasting memories that come with creating a board game world that only our group could have come up with. For these and other reasons, we've stuck with a group of 5 people instead of rotating players in and out. The grudges and alliances that have formed in our world are just as key to our RL experience as the board modification and hidden content. (Your mileage may well vary on this point: many groups have had 8-9 different players and loved it. In fact, one of our group members now his own copy of the game and planning on going this route. Of course, it's up to you.)

If I were to have one criticism of this game, it's that...well...it's still Risk. If you're a hardcore Risk-hater, like so many gamers are, this probably won't change your mind. If you don't mind it, then you'll enjoy this just fine, but be aware that, when you get down to the nitty gritty, the core game is pretty much the same as it's been for the past 50+ years. I can't really say for sure that I'd like it better if it were a more updated rules system, though.

A really brilliant idea, from start to finish. It is an extremely well-designed twist on an old classic, and I find myself constantly excited to play the next round.

I haven't had this much fun in a game in quite a while, or had this much anticipation until I could play again. Kudos to everyone who designed this one. I've already bought several extra copies to play again and again.

Wow. A terrific game that starts to shine after four or five games with the same players. Our recent games have been completely unique and full of metagaming. The synergies, yeah I said it - synergies, between the mechanics are novel and not things I anticipated. You can't only play for the current game; decisions you make one game affect the next game.

Oh, tonight we played two games in 90 minutes. Crazy.

I'm not sure it's possible to say enough good things about this game.

Discrete objectives and rapidly-achievable victory conditions mean that the traditional Risk engine doesn't drag. Variable terrain presents new considerations -- certainly vs standard Risk, and frequently from game to game. Evolving player powers continually alter a group's established meta. I'm pre-sold on any Legacy game the designers publish from this point forward.

Oh, and then there's that pack you never open.

Brilliance. Not only is this a streamlined version of Risk, but the evolving game concept in one of the few genuinely new ideas in board gaming in a long time. Playing and owning this game is an experience I haven't gotten from any other game. Highly recommended. Looking forward to the designer's next game in this format - SeaFall.

This game is Evolutionary.
A board game that goes where no game has gone before.
After all 15 games, it has been a fun blast.

Old post:
5 games in. 10 to go. And I'll keep the spoilers to myself. But they are most cool.

I think this game is evolutionary in our world of board gaming. And can't wait to see how other designers incorporate it.

I'm into my third game WORLD of this. Played four games of world 3 last week. Super fun to play again after a year.

One of the best gaming experiences I have ever had. Love how shared experiences are actually reflected on the board. Love how the game starts out simple but gets more complex as you unlock packages. Gives you time to learn one thing before moving on to the next thing.

The meta game of grudge matches is just brilliant. Not only does game gets change but the relationships between each player changes.

I wish this game can tweak it's scoring system a bit better. Low skill players can be caught with their paints down while more experience players can take a advantage of them. HOWEVER, I always feel like this game is about the experience and not the in tense strategy so it's not a big deal to me anyways.

Finish the game. I could play it more but I want to frame it and put it on my wall for memory sakes.

Metagaming at its finest! I am probably most excited that this concept may be applied to a better game than Risk, creating even more awesomeness.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Copy of Risk Legacy: $46.99

Ticket to BGG.Con: $85.00

Gas money for trip to Dallas: $74.39

Half cost of Hotel room for 5 nights: $329.78

Attacking your friend from your HQ in China on the first turn of the sixth game because he places his Major City in Afghanistan after you placed yours in Mongolia and using 3 missiles in the attack so you can open that pack and finding out that you nuked your buddy and he nuked you, completely wiping out both armies, and there is nothing left protecting either of your HQ's so a third buddy walks in and wins the game on the first turn, but you don't care because there are MUTANTS!!!! and China is now a big FALLOUT zone and your friend's faction will forever more be known as THE BRINGER OF NUCLEAR FIRE!!!! (cue heavy metal music \m/ \m/): DEFINITELY PRICELESS

After 11 more games at BGG.Con: Wow, this game definitely does not disappoint. Still have not seen two packs (World Capital and Do Not Open. Ever.) Lots of drama packed in that box. Replayability seems better than I expected, even knowing what is in the packs. Can't wait to finish this world and the other two I've been playing.

After 5th game: Drafting is a definite improvement. It helps to keep things from getting completely unbalanced. I am still interested to see how this will turn out...

Update after 4th game: The early going is too much classic Risk strategy of turtling and then vaulting to a victory with a huge turn of conquering. I think more mission and event cards would improve the game, so hoping that they do. Just got drafting rules, which should also help things out a bit. Still awaiting awesomeness...

Impression after first two games: Risk without the mission cards is not nearly as fun. Initial play is bland, but anticipation is great that it will get better. The mod mechanic is super-cool. Doesn't seem that important that the same 5 players play through all the games. I like that the first winners have a disadvantage, but it is a big disadvantage. I am thinking this will eventually be a 10 or a 1. I'm hoping it doesn't end up being more like Risk: Fluxx than Risk Legacy.

Never thought I could have this much fun with Risk. Absolutely brilliant.

Edit after 13 plays: Probably the best $50 I've ever spent. The game is just plain fun, and unlocking stuff has elicited it's fair share of "oh my God!"-styled responses. Can't wait to play it again.
