That's not my opinion. That's science. And science is one cold-hearted bitch with a 14-inch strap-on!

My first delve into the COIN series. This is a card-driven asymmetrical game set during the Cuban Revolution. It's more of a political area control game than a wargame. It did take a couple of plays to fully understand and be able to strategize using each faction's actions, but once you know your stuff the game really shines. A huge plus is that the game is playable solo against bots. Cuba Libre is considered to be the best entry level COIN game, and is often referred to as a "knife fight in a phone booth" due to it's smaller map size compared to the other games in the series. Viva la Revolución!

Card-driven asymmetrical game set during the Cuban Revolution. Like other games in the ‘COIN’ series there are four different factions each vying to achieve very different victory goals and the game is driven by cards determining turn order and the option of triggering an event. Players then use available resources to perform certain actions depending on the faction they control e.g. recruit, move, attack etc. The brilliance of this game, like others in the series, is the balance players have to strike in aiming for their own victory conditions whilst preventing opponents from achieving theirs, which can be difficult due to their asymmetry. Due to the smaller map it plays quite differently from the series’ previous effort ‘Andean Abyss’ and this leads to far more direct competition within specific areas, resulting in ‘CL’ being an absorbing and tense game requiring sophisticated strategies for success.

I really enjoyed Andean Abyss (and still do), but then Cuba Libre hit the table. This game just keeps getting better with every play. Excellent system filled with plenty of solid, difficult choices.
