Has the wooden Kadon edition - beautiful craftwork! It's a really good abstract game as well, and doesn't just look good. Plenty of strategy and tactics, and always having to weigh immediate territory towards influence and connection possibilities.

Challenging abstract which requires balancing connection and territorial elements.

There is obviously a first turn advantage - may lower my rating a litte when I've played the game more.

Rating after only a couple plays on the inner board. Will likely go up to a 10 after more plays.

I have known about this game for a few years, but have had a terrible time finding opponents. I feel like it could be one of the best abstract games invented/discovered in at least a hundred years. It deserves to be far more widely known than it is.

Fans of Go and/or connection games especially need to try *Star.

I sketched out my own board (only 7 spaces per outer edge for now because my sheet of paper is too small) to try it out. I like it, and recommend the smaller board to learn but not for long-term play. It neatly melds senses of area control and connection objectives.

This rating applies to *Star Y, a variant where the goal is to connect three non-adjacent sides. I must play it more.

A game derived from hex trough poli-hex. The rules are really simple once you get and hang of them, but they seemed a little difficult to explain.
Not using the "official" nomenclature and using parallels with go helped a lot.
I am sure the strategy is very deep, but there are not many players, so everybody is essentially a newbye.

More going on than Y, but I'm not certain whether I like or dislike that. Of course, I have played Y hundreds of times, and *Star only a few.

Among the descendents of Hex, this is probably the most baroque in terms of rules, but it's very intuitive after the first play. After some experience, it begins to feel like Go without the flaws: no worries about ko, no half point handicap to avoid draw, etc. The reason is that the the strategic dilemma is basically the same as in Go. Do you capture along the edges or reach across the center?

Nonetheless, something keeps me from falling in love with it, even though it's the kind of game that I normally fall in love with. I don't know why.

A nice Kadon game that unfortunately I don't care for. The warped hexagons of the board hurt my eyes, and scoring points is never my favorite objective. And there's a million pieces for this one. Would rather play something a couple of steps simpler like Game of Y.
