The longbox SI version of this game is very rare. It is probably the most obscure of the Sports Illustrated line, but it is great fun and there really aren't any other games like it.

Solid treatment of a unique sport where you also find out a little about famous decathletes of the past. Especially fun to roll a game during the Olympics.

As a former track athlete I cannot diss the only meaningful entry in my sport. It could have used a little more and better statistical analysis, and the DYO athlete system needed work.

I guess I have a soft spot for this game, from the older AH/SI line of sports replay games using three specially made die that roll numbers in the 10 to 39 range. Perhaps it's because I am sucker for sports replay games, perhaps it's because it's one of only three times I actually won something at the Avaloncon/WBC conventions in the summer. Just recently re-discovered the game during the Beijing Olympics, and it's nice to see the updated charts with additional athletes posted here by Tom McHugh.

On the downside, it's still alot of paperwork and math, looking up charts, etc., needed to complete an event, such that the game might seem too fiddly to some. The high points of the game are the strategy options for the high jump and pole vault, where you have a big incentive to save energy and pass on many heights. But then the 1500 m. run seems to take FOREVER to complete, which in a way is quite realistic.

Granted, not a lot of strategy, but fun to play with others and especially interesting if one plays a succession of competitions and records results in order to see which decathlete performs best over time. Also, the matter of strategy doesn't bother me, as decathlon is a sport more about performance than strategy, and since this game uses results of actual decathletes, what's interesting is playing and getting an idea over time of who excelled at which events and who might have been the best overall. At the same time, I think it has more strategy than people give it credit for. Still had my original game box, but not the game board or rule book, only the chits for the athletes and lots of scoresheets. So, I bought a used, complete copy, October 2012.

Classic sports game of my youth, but not one I'm that liable to suggest anymore. Prefer deeper strategy, but still fun to wheel out those Avalon Hill dice I used in Bowl Bound, Paydirt, etc.

This is mostly a dice rolling contest, but it still has elements of strategy if you pay attention to the strengths and weaknesses of your athlete and his competitors.

A game I've had for a long while, and one that I've only played solo. Good as far as it goes but not good enough. Someone, somewhere must be able to come up with a better representation of the decathlon than this.

If you remember playing those old button mashing video games from the 80s, where to flick buttons to speed up and press another button to jump? Silly games but great fun when you play against friends. This is what this game is like. You can play it solitaire as well.

Pretty much a basic dice rolling game. The problem with the game is that there are few decisions to make. During the running events there are none, during some of the filed events you can decide to play safe, do average attempt, or go all out. You can also decide to skip some heights of the pole vault and high jump. You can get more athletes (download on web) to make it a bit more interesting. Played it a bunch and still pull it out to play solitaire (which it does very nicely).

Lots of dice rolling, but still fun. Doing an 8-decathlete event right now: Thorpe kicks butt. Bruce Jenner fading terribly fast. Some choices to make, but nothing heavy.

Pulled it out after many years, and it is still dependent on which athlete you get. Once you know the athletes, you can try some high risk-high reward tactics (ie. knowing when to push it on the high jump because you know you are going to get creamed in the 1500). Small house rules add a bit to the game, as to the "expansions" that can be found in the files section. Still, one of AH's lesser sports sims IMO.

Looking at the amount of meaningful decisions, Decathlon should be a '1' as a game. Even in Yahtzee decision-making is more meaningful. But this game has a charm as a solitaire exercise / simulation for people enjoying statistics and playing for the experience. To draw an odd comparison, this is not so different to wargaming. It might even be fun in the right group if handicaps are used to balance out the decathletes.

See my comments for Outdoor Survival. As a kid, I would have rated this a 10. Now? It's not much more than a roll, move, roll, look up table. Back in the era of Bruce Jenner, though, this was a great game for a boy to have. Yeah, everyone wanted to be Jim Thorpe, but playing the game was basically like being a part of a larger conversation. Back then, a big chunk of my reading was "boys stories" about baseball players. This game was essentially that, but for track and field.

As straight replay game this is fine. But don't prepare to make many agonizing decisions. I couldn't imagine playing this game other than solo (or any statistically accurate decathalon game for that matter). Too many other good sports-related board games out there to play this one.

Game was fun when I was in high school and running track, but limited decisions, plus utter dominance by Jim Thorpe make this less fun. Lemonhead has made cards for new Decathaletes which makes it more competitive. Ultimately, this isn't a bad way to pass some time if you enjoy watching sports unfold before you.

The game plays itself mostly. The only decision point is to risk trying for a better score against an injury. Hint: an injury will certainly remove the player from contention. In fact, it can be rare that a player can get through all 10 events without hitting at least one injury.

Boring statistical simulation of a boring sport (The thing only more boring than track is field as one wag put it.)

Essentially roll special dice on a chart and use the result to complete a decathlon with an historic Olympic decathlete.

Strategy:
- On throwing events and the long jump, you can choose the make a safe attempt or go all out, risking a foul or injury.
- On the high jump & pole vault if you take too many attempts you can become fatigued and lose time in the later 400 and 1500 events.

Roll and score, roll again and score. The Decathlon is actually an interesting group of events that test athletes across a range of abilities - not all of which they can be really good at. This game ignores all the nuances of a terrific sporting event and makes you roll dice almost meaninglessly. What a shame.
