Note to Hasbro: Please publish a travel version of this game!

Nov 2012: Finally found a travel version of this game in Switzerland (named Topword). Because the version available there was in German, I bought two copies so that I could create a tile mix better suited to play in English. Best part, the travel version only cost 5 CHF!

One complaint I have about the travel version is that the tiles are way too thin; it's hard to pick them up.

This is possibly my favourite word game. Upgraded the rating from 8 to 10.

Aug 2010: I have a new found respect and love for word games. Upgraded from 5 to 8.

More tactical and thus more fun than Scrabble. When I play word games, I want to make words. I don't want to think about rack management, trying not to open up the board to my opponent -- in other words, Scrabble has too much strategy that gets in the way of forming words!

Because Upwords has more ways to make words, to me it's simply more fun! In this game, playing one tile can score you a lot of points! I have to find the 10x10 version; I only have the 8x8 one.

Feb 2006: A less demoralizing variant of Scrabble, since the tile-laying rules are more flexible. Still, it’s basically Scrabble and I despise that game.

Nice for a change of pace from Scrabble. Almost a 10, but something about the scoring makes it a bit bland for me-- I miss the Scrabble letter values and board bonuses!

This game is hard! It's like Scrabble but you have to fit the words into a much smaller space. With experience it becomes competitive as you can see your opponent's scoring opportunities and try to make words to block them, and that reveals a whole new way of thought.

If you're a Scrabble enthusiast, this is definitely worth a shot! It's a totally different approach to playing the "spell-a-word" type of game since you're building UP!!! Sound easy?? Try the game! It's more challenging than it sounds because you have to examine the game from a different perspective! It can be a bit long, but it's fun!

Fantastic Scrabble variant. Shorter play time and much more casual play -- definite keeper and a great game to bring out when we don't want to play a full game of Scrabble!

(Older 8x8 version, not the newer and longer 10x10 version)

Although I seem to win less often than in Scrabble, I sometimes find this more enjoyable. Smal creative plays can score far more points than individual words. Obscurity and vocabulary matter a lot less, and creativity with transforming words rules the board. Nearing the end of a game, any stack with less than 5 is a chance for a 20-40 point score.

I in someways don't like the stacking because it encourages fewer interesting words and lots of gamesmanship, but the game is so fast and the continued scoring from stacking allows less "wordy" people to enjoy the game also.

Similar to Scrabble, but with the smaller play area it can be harder to find room for words. Except you can stack tiles on previously existing words, so you have that option. It ends up being a challenging Scrabble variant.
