A fast playing and addictive game. There are several different rule sets available online. It is more than just rolling dice and moving. There are subtle strategies if you take the time to look for them. Modern game designers could learn a lesson or two from the ancients!

I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun this simple race game is. With the right set of rules there's just enough tactical thinking to give a nice balance between luck and skill.

A "Ki nevet a végén?" alias "Ne mérgelődj, emeber!" kiütőcskés alapötletének fantasztikusan jól működő, izgalmas, fordulatos, taktikus, kétszemélyes, kb. 4000 éves változata. Ki gondolta volna? (SK)

A really enjoyable 2-person race game, that is easy to learn and involves some strategy during play. The fact that it is 4,500 years old makes it even more interesting. Especially fun using a version that is like the original found in the ancient city of Ur (with round counters, pyramidal dice and a 3-dimensional board) like the excellent Northwest Corner version (that I have). There are many versions (with different routes on the board) of the game proposed, as no complete rules have ever been found - our preference is the rules proposed by Masters at http://www.mastersgames.com/rules/royal-ur-rules.htm . Another good site for info is Lucky Dogs Games: http://www.luckydog.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/games/ur

This game can be described as Backgammon for kids or more interesting Pachisi for two players.

Decent introduction to and ancestor of Backgammon, interesting to me as my set uses Egyptian throwing sticks, which make a nice change to dice.

I have a thing for old games. Probably because I love ancient history. Even though the rules are simple, this game is so much fun for me. It is one of the oldest games (it is the oldest game that was found with all the pieces intact at one archaeological site: dice, board, pieces, etc...)

As for the gameplay, I love the mechanics of blocking the other player. And the pain you feel when you roll all 0s so you don't move... ugh! There are a few decent versions of the game online too, for when you can't find people who would want to play this game.

Thousands of years old ... very basic roll and move fun ... make your own 2-sided dice (flat sticks) for a different flavor. Sara loves it, I get beat all the time, so I dread this one ... but get stuck playing it a lot!

We love the ancient wooden games - Senet, Mancala, The Royal Game of Ur...

The main problem here is trying to determine which rules set to use.

Apparently the originals were all lost when the Great God Marduk, in a famous faux pas, mistook the crate containing all copies for a tiny after dinner mint and downed them all after a tainted meal of rancid fois gras. Lovely.

I played the game in two versions. The first one is a similar game to Pachisi, you have to be lucky with your dices to win this one. They also had a second game and that was more tactical and it gave it a little bit of challenge.

Played according to the rules suggested by Finkel (how close they are to the original lost rules is a different issue), the Royal Game of Ur is a shorter and less sophisticated ancestor of backgammon: both players have got to enter their stones on the board and take them to the end of their track, sending as many stones belonging to the opponent off the board (for their own safety) during middle play. Some spaces are safe and possess a certain tactical value.

Overall Ur's a light-paced, not too demanding game that benefits from being played with replicas of the famous piece now exposed in the British Museum. This applies especially to the dice: the original ones were four tetrahedrons with one coloured corner, and implied therefore a different distribution of probabilities to the one corresponding to standard dice.

Not bad very simple mechanics, but strategy is fairly complex and someone who is behind can pull off a win. only draw back is the dice can cause no moves for many rolls.

Not a bad game to play once in a while. It can be very dependant on the dice, but you usually have some options available to control that. There are many many different version of the game and I personally feel that the appearance of the game will enhance the game somewhat. There are also a few different variants to the game depending on which version you have. This being due to the fact that nobody really knows the true original rules and what we have today is just a pure speculation of what we could today come up with on how the game was played in the past. Which is totally understandable due to this supposedly being the very first boardgame known to man.

Although simplistic, the game is not without merits. One feels the origins of backgammon and so many other games. It is a cool experience to to play a game that the ancient Mesopotamians were playing almost 5000 years ago!

Fun random game somewhat similar to Backgammon, but in my opinion (When played with the advanced rules) creates more decisions. Cut out the set-up portion of the game, and allow for the first piece to begin movement if wanted. Hefty luck factor, but the better player should still win.
