Unbelievably tense and interesting game which has true 18xx taste and suitable for only 2 players and in 2 hours.

This game is good as a helpful learning game. Fits well for me when playing 2 or 3 player, especially when 1830 is longer for just 2 or 3

Good because it is possible to finish in less than 180 minutes and requires only 3 players, but the game lacks some things that make it worse than other 18XX:

- The map is too constrained, here the rail building is more important than the stock buying/selling.
- There are only 3 companies which means that each player controls one company and it's hard to try different things or make train trades between the companies.
- I suspect that it has low replayability due to the two complains listed above.

But in all, if you want to play a 18XX in about 3 hours or so, this is a good anti cold turkey.

Surprisingly good little game on such a small map. The companies are capitalised incrementally, at CMV (no Par). Shares only increase in value if Div >= CMV, making it (like 1849) hard to increase stock value in the early game and making low pars more attractive. It also makes withholding less bad.

Inc. Cap. leads to a lack of funds, which can be circumvented in a number of ways:
* Companies can sell their own stock to the pool (or buy it back) at CMV, though this decreases share price (unless it is already at the bottom - more likely with a low Par).
* Bonds - bought from the bank for $300 and don't count against the certificate limit, but there are so few share available in the game that buying one of these early can make you miss out on other opportunities. The $50 can be donated to the company, but that then hurts the player. I think it's best to always keep the money for yourself, unless your company is just a little short for something.
* Half dividends. These are a handy compromise between withholding and a full payout. You can still get some money and +1 stock bump while also helping your company fund a train or whatever.

Buying in privates is difficult, and they pay a poor rate of return. The powers are not brilliant either. The 3T and 4T are expensive, so you can buy in your private at the expense of not buying a train.

Due to the 40% President certificate, it is unlikely to see company dumps, asset stripping, changes of presidency or forced train purchases, and any forced purchases would not be painful due to the cheap trains. Losing a 40% cert would be a Pyrrhic victory. As such it is more of a 'run companies well game' where you very much have 'your' company, and are trying to run it more effectively than others whilst making as much money for yourself as possible. Having said that, there is some nastiness on the tiny map, mainly in the fight over the OO hex and token blocking.

2.5 hours on my first play with 3 players (two 18xx newbs).

Made own copy of this game from PBeM information and images on here.
Played out in about an hour and was enjoyable. Will play again a couple of times until the strategies have blown out.

I'm divided in mind as to whether this is a good version of 18xx for two players. It seems inevitable that each player will buy one company, and whoever operates best wins. It has felt like the stock market phase is superfluous -- but I haven't played this with more experienced 18xx players.

This game has earned it's spot because I can use it to show one other person quickly what is possible within the 18xx series.

These circumstances arise.

Edit: 18Oki has replaced this game.

I don't like much many of the mechanics common to all 18XX games so I'll focus on the stuff unique to 1800 in my comments.

I like the miniature version of the game. It demonstrates that a lot can be done with a small map. Stil I would have made a slightly bigger map, maybe 1 additional row of hex would have been perfect (see later).

I like the idea of having bonds, it makes it a sure investment with steady income and you do not lose any money because you cash in your bond certificate at the end. You also have the flexibility to keep the money or give it to your company.

I also like the idea that there is express trains instead of diesel train. It would normally allow people to start a 2nd company later in the game since a level 2 express train is only 50% more expensive than a level 2 train. But since there is only 1 company per player, it's not really useful.

One of the complains I have in 18XX is that there is a lot of restrictions and exceptions which are not always useful. Their un-usefulness is much more appearant in this game since there is only 2 players. For example, the fact that players can only own 70% of their company is a useless limitation. Only 1 player can actually buy these 3 leftover shares, and if he refuses than you will never be able to get full fundings.

These restrictions also make sure that you cannot try different strategies from a game to another. Players will end up with the same stock configuration every game. Since there is only 2 company, players cannot start multiple companies. A suggestion could be to use a 3 player setup and play with 2 players, so that at least 1 player can start 2 companies. It would allow much more variable gameplay with less symmetry between players, and there will be no need to print 2 boards.

At the beginning of the game, players are struggling but not too much because the train rusting is not too deadly. But past the middle of the game, there is nothing left to do. Coorporation can buy new trains, but most of the time they can already cover the map with 2 trains, and there is not much more rails to build. Building more than 2 stations is actually a waste since you can cover the whole map easily with only 2 stations ( and sometimes with only 1). Blocking path of a player is impossible at 2 players, maybe at 3 it would be better. This is why I would suggest adding like 4 hexes to the 3 player map to have a bit more space.

So what happens, it that players simply operate, collect the cash, and continue this process until the bank is bankrupt. The the latest half of the game, there is not really a challenge, you just see if all the work you did at the beginning of the game will finally pay off at the end of the game.

In general, I like the miniature game and some mechanics could be interesting for other 18XX games, but some restrictions might need to be removed or more stuff needs to be added to make sure that every game will play differently.

Printed up Carthaginian's version, August 2010. As a game, 1800 isn't that great. Having played twice, I wouldn't use it beyond a learning exercise for the 18xx genre. Gave it to a friend in January 2011.

Interesting quick 18xx, but ironically I don't think it makes for a good teaching game. Good for 18xx vets who want a quick lunch game. The 3 player version is much much better than the 2 player.

I made this copy myself with some heavy card stock and a nice color laser printer.
