Vastly under-rated on BGG.

This is a board game that is to simulate one single particular (very important) battle in ancient history and it does so VERY well and in such a manner you can teach most 10 year-olds the basic game.

With the many variants around this has quite alot of replay for a fan of this era.

What more can anyone ask for from a game designed to simulate a single battle? Please note the co-designer of this fantastic game.

A solid 10

Exciting and dynamic design that is the benchmark for outstanding ancient battle simulations. Two additional battles taking advantage of this system were provided in "The General" magazine.

The Guidon 1st edition was a landmark design that gave me lot's of play time and when they added in the expansion kit-Alexander's Other Battles with Granicus,Issus and The Hydapspes it got even better.

AH's 1st edition sort of fell flat since they didn't have back printed counters like the less professional made Guidon game. Map was OK if not somewhat garnish(garnish, that's putting it mildly ).
The 2nd edition with back printed counters and a slightly toned down map made it much better. The 2 extra battles in the General helped expand the game.

To me still one of the great players game and a blast to play solo.Plus it always looked and felt like an ancient battle.Still play it a couple of times a year.

An excellent and inovative game system..seems to favour them macedonians and rightfully so...morale scale is a great idea I have actually designed a scenario"battle of the granicus"using half the map and the game counters..the map is ordinary but the rules are fine

This game is a gem. Designed by Don Greenwood and the immortal Gary Gygax. This game plays fast and ferocious. Well balanced (with careful Macedonian play) The map-board is a little plain, but I always liked the look of this one (something about the counters).

A fairly straight forward battle, with enough variation in troops to make it interesting. The moral rules are really a great idea, wish there were more games that had incorperated that idea.

Nice light war game by the legendary Gary Gygax which captures the feel of the period. The units are all named so you get an evocative riot of elephants, chariots, Agrianians, Companions, Dahae Horse Archers and Sakae Cavalry. More playable than many later attempts at the genre but the map has to be seen to be believed.

Amazing that this came out in the early 70s. Manages to mostly overcome its odds-based CRT model. The CRT(s) themselves have some interesting effects to distinguish them from the typical 70s combat systems, like the "melee" result that locks two units in place. Morale is handled elegantly; as your morale degrades, you are forced to fight on different CRTs with progressively less favorable outcomes. The reverse is true if your morale improves.

The genius of this game is the sliding combat results charts based upon morale. The Macedonians can defeat the Persians in spite of being vastly outnumbered because Alexander's well-trained and disciplined troops will stand and fight while the vast, hastily raised Persian levies might not. Excellent historical flavor. Recommended.

Very good game, particularly if you are up for the advanced rules using facing. I have found it to be very balanced. I have always used the historical setup, which I think improves game balance. Once the battle starts, it usually leads to the end of the game.

Interesting game mechanics. I enjoy this game despite the horrible map board. This was one of my early games and I lost the pieces and box, so I bought an almost new copy and started teaching it to my wife who is interested in the time period.

Not everyone will agree, but I think the board in AtG is one of the ugliest I have ever seen. Still, it's a fun game. Large hexes allow varied size counters to represent the many diverse units involved. Morale is the key to victory.

Old skool game! Holds up very well for being almost 40 years old. I quite liked the mechanics surrounding morale erosion. A few clunky bits (for example, no cavalry evasion from approaching phalanx) but otherwise a fun game.

Seems the Persians always get bogged down by the morale rule. Tough to have so many expendable units, and not be able to treat them as cannon fodder.

Played this one allot back in the 70's. Fast moving and fun, much better using the advanced rules. The morale system used in the game was a nice attempt but ultimately creates many artificial and unrealistic effects. Good introducing someone to wargaming though. Good replay value.

I would probably rate this higher if someone would re-write the rulebook for the modern wargamer. I think if that happened (and a reprint...VPG Gold Banner!?) it would really be a top intro wargame.

Great game, but I could never win with either side. My gaming buddies love that game. I bought this for my father for fathers day back in the day. He never opened it, I think he was afraid I was going to ask him to play it. This is the man that was going to stuff each and every Gettysburg '61 little cardboard piece up my a.. (and he would have) if I asked him one more time what "soak off" ment. That was enough encouragement for me to learn to read rules without any questions. Just do it until I understood how to play the game. Thanks Dad!
