Surprising depth despite the ultra-simple rules. Turn-based setup of the starting positions does not prevent dull opening routines, though. That's why we prefer it simultaneous and hidden (or completely random, for a casual game, especially with beginners or children, or even with handicap: random setup, loser of last game picks side).

With Stonehenge, Intermezzo, Hong Kong and Time Square my favorite two-player Knizia. I won several times against a very good chess player, so obviously looking ahead doesn't prevent some nice surprises...

Nice chess-like game with rules which make it playable in 10 minutes. Much better than it appears to be.

Great little abstract with more strategy then you might think on the first look.

Fast and clever game plays like a slightly devious variation of checkers. If you can get past the bizarre theme involving wrestling musicians, this is a quick good time.

Clever little abstract game of movement & taking from Knizia, but there seems to be a need to start with good placement. The Champion X piece is a clever idea. Nice game you could make at home but not worth pursuing. Stonehenge is better.

10 minute strategy no luck filler, same flavour as Stratego(more than Chess or Checkers but it is a tad similiar to those).

Much much shorter and with open information so no hidden units. Units are valued 1 to 9, 1 being the strongest fighter and 9 being the weakest but the best one you could possibly get across (besides the "X" which ends the game)which makes it a little tricky and interesting.

Good for weeknights
