its got nothing to do with the other ST that used the same cover....an oversight that really bugs me !!!!!!!!!!!!!! theres hundreds of illustrations that could have been used and the mag reuses the same one...and thus causes confusionn like Lawrence has....for the record the older game is a brilliant berg wargame on the actual battle of Hastings its one of my favs This is a larger scale campaign game.

Relatively simple but involving. A very good attempt to simulate a difficult period. The only problem - in the three games I've played so far, King Harold sits in London just waiting for the Normans - perhaps a rule could be added that would make the Norman invasion a surprise. At the moment it's more like Operation Seelowe.

Sort of an AH "Kingmaker" lite and that's not a bad thing. The game plays rather quickly, I found. Low counter density, and the large clearl printed counters are great for my (aging) eyes. Rules are fairly complete, especially given this is an S&T in-mag game. However, some counters are apparently missing, specifically the event chit that simulates the mercenary pretender Tostig.Overall, probably wouldn't buy it in a box, but a fun game nonetheless.

Rating after 1 four-player game. Enjoyable and entertaining; particularly liked the quasi-tactical combat system and the somewhat chaotic chit pull mechanism. Will play again but with an added victory condition that any player with the sole remaining king in Britain and with the highest feudal total wins a sudden death game if the king is crowned per the rules. This will encourage William not to skulk about in Normandy in the early part of the game and will give the other players the opportunity to win through the elimination of their rival pretenders to the throne.
Make sure you play with the revised rules and the errata (towns give a forage value of 2, not 1 as shown on the map). The battle board on the map is ridiculously small - we used the one from Columbia Games' Napoleon.

Is it different from the one designed by Richard Berg 20 years ago? The magazine cover looks the same. The former is a tactical-operational level simulation of the battle of Hastings. This one from Joseph Miranda is on the strategic conquest of England.

My rating is generous considering the flaws in the game, but I liked it and love the era.

This is a nice little game, that probably could need a few house rules. But as far as medieval strategic games go the choice is severely limited, so if you like the theme you could give this game a try.

Played once and liked it.
Actually you do not have much choice if you want to play a medieval area strategic or operational game.
You have to cope with some quirks, probably could use some house rules, but for a friendly game it is decent enough.

Very badly flawed unless some variant rules are adopted, but lots of nice touches, and a period and situation I really want to play,

Promising game, nice system, good subject matter (that's rarely covered). Unfortunately it falters in the implementation. Certain rules are half developed while others are weird and cause strange things to happen (vassalage for instance).

Some more play testing and a few rules tweaks could produce a really good game. Too bad.

The subject is interesting and the counters are great. But there are holes in the rules and luck is so important that it lowers the historicity level of the game.
Anyway, we had fun playing it (the 4 players game).

Wanted to like it but there's just so much that's off about both the mechanics and the history. The emphasis on fighting from prepared positions (stockade-like castles) and the fact that the defender enjoys a benefit for defending in favorable terrain (like woods) is completely laughable. The chit system doesn't work and the logistics of the period go completely unrepresented. Even if you overlook the historical issues, the game itself is weak - I suggest you foist the Britons on whomever you like least as they are almost missing enough units to occupy enough of the map to win (and the proposed fix that the Britons win by default if none of the other factions do so is too silly for words).

5. Brought the S & T game just to look, and whilst I see the need to modify certain factors/values to fit the game mechanics employed I have to say their are a few points that strike me as bizarre

Certain Individuals are potential kings - Harold, Harada, William - obviously correct
Tostig - ageed (although not good news for the Governance of England)
Alain, Odo, Eustace - not a chance, if William had died the Norman conquest would have fallen apart. The Witan would never have accepted any of his sidekicks
Malcolm (Scotland) - again not a hope

Other than the 4 I agree with the only other realistic Kings of England were Leif (Danish King), Gyrth (Harold's most capable brother) and the Aethling (young kid who the Witan would have ruled on behalf of until he reached maturity)

Also the Norman force is roughly twice the size of the Norwegian force - the truth was completely the reverse. Part of the problem here appears to be the game requires a player to dominate England by the end of 1066. William did not do this - in order to make it possible for William to win the game his forces have been boosted. William's success was because he has a small but well trained force not that he had the biggest army. History has been doctored to fit the game.

Also I have problems with how Edwin (Mercia) and Morcar (Northumberland) are portrayed - they were not reliable allies of Harold and how they would react to events is critical to correctly portray Harada's chances.

It is obviously easy to critise another game on a subject you yourself are working on (I have my own game in the works) but first impressions are that unacceptable liberties have been taken with historical accuracy in order to shoe horn history into fitting a game system.

I will post on the game itself later
