Upgraded from 8 to 9 after two plays.

This investment game has a nice wargame-like touch. It is a mixture of Railroad Tycoon, Acquire and Diplomacy.
I like both its complexity and simplicity. I like both the lack of luck and the gambling element in betting on the right countries.

Upgraded to 10 after three plays.
This game is getting better and better.

What a delicate balance of opposing forces. Every time you buy a bond you have to weigh the relative benefits of a tax bonus, player motivation, and bond payouts at the end and in the near future. Add to this the decisions that take place on the board with respect to your own personal cash and the struggle for more taxes and you've truly got an exceptional game.

The really great thing about Imperial is that I think it's approachable. There's few people that didn't love it the first time they played, and the others eventually followed suit.

I've heard the investor card variants described as good but different games, but I feel like they're both the same. The investor card just introduces a bit more leeway for beginners at the expense of control. I vastly prefer the no-investor card variant now, but I'd never turn down a game with it.

Probably the best economic game I've played. The fighting on the board is great in that you don't feel like you are getting attack, but rather just a country that you are more heavily invested in, which removes the feelings of being personally attacked that can arise in multiplayer wargames. It's a good implementation of a rondel as well, in that it really just limits you from doing some of the key actions like invest and taxation twice in a row, but being able to spend money to push further along the rondel gives you enough choice that the rondel is not limiting. Turns really go very quickly - the only real downtime is when someone needs to decide what country bond to invest in, since it's hard to plan ahead exactly how much money you're going to have and the relative value of each country when your turn comes up to buy. If you like stock games like Airlines Europe and Chicago Express, and also like multiplayer wargames like Game of Thrones, this is the perfect mixture of the 2. I'd also add that it's one of those games that doesn't take any longer with more players, since it's really the 6 countries taking turns and the controlling player just deciding what the country does, rather than each player taking turns.

Played this for the first time and won. Of course it was everybody else's first time too, so not that big of a deal. Strategy so far? Make friends, never skip an opportunity to make income or invest, pump up your factories early. Don't be afraid to take controlling interest in a nation. Use it to play one country off another for your own timely purposes.Phil has this.

You need (1)factories to (2)produce more units at one time and increase the value of the country. You can also (3)import up to 3 units for $1M each. You can (4)maneuver your armies and fleets 1 space each.

Choose (5)investor when you hold the most bonds for the country and when you have the investor card so you can get $2M and buy a bond.

Choose (6)Taxation to *get tax dividend (increase from last chart position) from the bank. *Add $2M per factory & $1M per chip - $1M per unit in money to the Nation coffer. *Increase the value of shares (power points) according to the blue number amount.

Rondel choice order:
Investor
Import
Production
Maneuver
Taxation
Factory
Production
Maneuver

Strategy: Factory, Production, Maneuver (take land or set up defense), Import units (gird position), Maneuver, Tax

Well worth the hype this game received. I enjoyed the frustrating decisions and waiting for the investor card to move. Great mechanics in a great game of economics with some basic military pieces thrown in to make a huge impact.

You can benefit from what different countries are doing on the board by buying shares in them. To win it seems you need to be in control of two countries.

My opinion on this one has changed drastically over the past few years. I hated it the first time I played it but as I grew to understand the game better and realize the "invest" piece and try to balance that with the rondel mechanism, I now want to add it to my collection and get it to the table more often too.

An odd-feeling game, that I couldn't quite wrap my mind around at first play. Only one person at the table had played before, which I think skewed play. I won by $1. Need more plays.

Update: I now own Imperial 2030, but I think I prefer this version. 2030's changes seem to 'script' the game too much (?), and make a come-from-behind victory unlikely.

The heaviest of Gerdts' rondel games. The first time played has to be a learning experience -- between the economics of buying bonds and maneuvering units to increase your advantage/deny others, there's much going on. A very great, longish, engrossing game. This doesn't stop me from enjoying the game while playing!

Excellent game. Despite none of it's ingredients being new or innovative (Rondel, Fighting, Stock Holding have all been done before), they are blended together in a unique way here in Gerdts' second Waro.

It plays in about 2 hours, which is perfect for its weight. I can't decide if I like this or Antike best.

Edit: Jun 2010 - Antike is better. Imperial is too similar each time.

Edit: May 2011 - Antike is too similar each time, Imperial is better.

The fact that you do not have exclusive ownership of any nation takes this out of the Risk/Axis camp and makes it something wonderfully new. It's as if the players are arms dealers. This game is about empire building and combat, but the point is not to dominate, it's to bet on the winner.

I enjoy watching the countries cycle through expansion and contraction, building successively bigger waves toward investment and taxation. Those who strive to hold onto to "their" country will find themselves frustrated by their inability to hold territories; those who wander aimlessly without ever controlling a country will miss out on the joy of creating those rhythmic financial waves.

Throughout my plays I was reminded of Chicago Express. The two share stock-holding, investment, and portfolio diversification but illicit different emotional responses via their themes. Ultimately I prefer Chicago Express as it provides a similar experience in less than an hour and allows all investors to run operations.
