Fantastic game. After 2 Simple and one Full game we are really excited (after buying it an Thursday in Essen). Even without a map a great 'Civ' :-). Takes a lot time, but for us, it is worth it.

The biggest disadvantage of this game is, that it isn't packed together with two weeks holiday. I played it already about 20 times and I like it very much. The variety of possible strategies is big and every game is different. Two-player game is also very good.

Played it ten times now and this has rightly become the holy grail of civilization builder games, in my opinion. Simple mechanisms...a card game basically, no map and super fun to play. The simple game is simple and quick, but the advanced and full games are what my rating is for. The scope is wonderful and the game play is exciting and just about as good as it can get for me. Rules are in perfect English and very clear even though the game was designed in the Czech Republic. Art work is fabulous and the quality of the box and contents and rules is very high. Found at Essen in 2006 and helped the 2nd edition become a reality. Now that I can play it easily on Board Game Arena, I like it even more.

This game is great. Still need to play the full game. Although there is downtime I like the feel and enjoy watching other players develop there civilization, while I am planning my next step. I think 3 or 2 players is good, but 4 players with speedy play might be best. Time to convert some more game buddies. After playing the full game I give my final rating.

Almost a 10! Oh what the hey I am in a good mood today for me this game a 10. I am happy to have found some like minded geeks to try this game with

I have really struggled at this game, losing far more than normal but I keep wanting to come back for more. This game sticks with me and leaves me wanting to play again more than almost any other game.

What a fantastic game. Every game mechanic are well intertwined into each other, that elevates the game further.
Some remarks that the game are fiddly, but I think this is just a remark when you don't have anything else to complain about.

May be a bit long to play. But who gives...

Excellent epic complex card-driven civilisation game. A whole range of concepts have been nicely integrated into the main mechanisms: happiness, corruption, revolutions, colonization, military conflict, culture, important or remarkable leaders, ... Resources and technology points are more important than food to progress with your civilisation (other civilisation games tend to have a more acute shortage of food). The game components are rather tiny and should have been bigger. *** 22 Feb 2007: Simple game with three newbies took a bit more than three hours, including explanation, but ended rather abruptly. As indicated in the rules, the simple game should only be played to learn the basic game mechanisms. *** 24 Feb 2007: Full game with three players, of which two newbies, lasted almost nine hours. Should go faster with more experience, but nevertheless downtime between turns might be an issue. Winning thanks to fast food chains was rather pleasant! *** 25 Feb 2007: Advanced game with three players (again two newbies) - 5 hours. Just as with the simple game, the game ended too fast. There were still a whole lot of things to do and the Age III cards looked tempting. *** 14 March 2007: Full game with two players - 5 hours. *** 12 January 2008: Full game with three players - 5 hours. *** 20 September 2008: Simple game with three players. *** 25 April 2009: Full game with three players - 7 or 8 hours. *** Conclusion: the full game has definitely my preference! *** 2013: started online playing ...

A dozen plays advanced and full game rules - takes a partial game to learn the mechanics. Often worth restarting at that point if you have a mix of veterans and noobs. The rules are different during the first three turns so a careful reading is needed to catch all the details. The game pace moves along suprisingly quickly but it is still a long, enjoyable, game. Reminds me of Sid Meier's Civ (computer game).

Would benefit from a larger individual player mat that the cards were tucked around so the marker beads did not have to be picked up or slid across card edges.

I'm working out a variant that allows for simultaneious play during the civil actions phase to greatly speed play.

"The" civilization-building card game! A rich, deep, very well designed game. It can take several hours to play, but the time generally goes by very quickly.

no room for improvement of the ranking here; this is a great game. fun, complex, and longish. lots of things to think about and do, not enough actions. damn good. the age cards give terrific thematic immersion, and the balance between military and civic improvements always keeps you thinking.

A fantastic game. So much strategy. You need to keep on top of so many things. A real brain burner. Six hours of mental exercise, which I consider fun, fun, fun. After this many hours of concentration I really want to win. Love it.

A preliminary rating, after just playing the short game and advanced game, but holy cow is this ever fun. Meaty, full of decisions, with a ton of apparent strategies and a million places I go back and think about how I could have done things differently.

EDIT: Yeah, this is a nine after more playing.

EDIT: I've now played this about 10 times or so, and it's riveting stuff. Moving up to a 10.

Longish and fiddly in some respects, this is still a riveting game. There is some downtime, but if players work at it, it CAN move fairly briskly. I wouldn't play with more than three players. Have played the two-age game several time, both as a two-player and three-player game. While these have been pretty long games, I've ended each one thinking that my development 'engine' was just getting set up, and each time I was curious how my setup would have performed in the third age of the full game. Gotta try that. Meanwhile, for the advanced game, my rating is an 8 with room for adjustment once I have a chance to play the full game. So far, I'd rate this as the best civilization-building game yet designed .. and there have been a lot of attempts. Update: Have now played the full game, and rating remains a solid 8. Often play the "peaceful" variant when playing with my wife, who enjoys building her civ but doesn't dig the conflict. There's still plenty of interaction and incentive to have a strong army even in the peaceful variant. Update ... continuted play tells me that this is a very tough game to master. I remain challenged and interested. Rating now a 9, and possibly headed to 10.
