I rarely do this but even after just one play I know this is a 10 for me and I doubt it will ever drop.

After several dozen games on-line my rating it a 10 has been confirmed. I love this game and wish I could play it face to face more often. But on-line will have to do. At least I get to play with friends far away who are great opponents.

A really good civ game. I've always liked the idea of civ-style boardgames but found the long playtime prohibitive. These days I don't have an entire weekend to spare. TTA is a really nice balance between depth of play but with a reasonable playtime. You can knock out a game in 4 or 5 hours. The various mechanics for controlling the growth and development of your civilisation are elegant and devlishly tricky to master. There are numerous routes to victory, so it's not all about who has the biggest stick (Freud eat your hear out). If you haven't tried it then I would heartily recommend you do.

Interesting game on civilization development.

Pros: The lack of a map seems to alleviate the usual 3 player game difficulty where the first two players to fight basically hand the game to the third player. The mechanism for worker assignment and resource consumption works very well.

Cons:
1. Very steep learning curve. I would suggest that when teaching new players you play two or three turns and then reset and start the game for real. This would add to the length of the game but it would enable the players to really screw up once without losing their first game by a humiliating margin. A new player should otherwise expect to be in last place and to consider it a victory if he scores more than half of the leader's score.

2. The game defines fiddly. However the many bits used in the game are essential. I do not believe tracks, dials or cards would function properly to deal with the worker placement mechanic. Just be aware that you will screw up at least once when you play the game. I suspect that even experienced players will forget to execute one of the many steps in the advanced game.

Game is a ton of fun. Next to Dominant Species, my favorite game. Lots of meaty player choices. Only complaints are the game is longer with more people, and you really can't play with newbies without taking the time to do a simple game first. There are a few bits I don't like (late game, you can have tons of actions but nothing to do with them if you aren't extremely careful with your choices), but overall, I really like the game.

Comparable in complexity to Dominant Species, but a lot more intuitive. The game play weight is 4 instead of 3 because you get stuck with some extremely difficult mutually exclusive decisions later on, plus there are a number of mechanics you need to remember to balance and sometimes do math several turns ahead.

That all said, much as I love the game, I wouldn't really recommend buying it. It's tough to jump into the full game (or the medium game) with newbies, and even among my dedicated gaming group, I have trouble getting people to play this.

** Update. Currently flavour of the month, so playing this quite a bit (full game).

Quite like the standard game - yes it's got the combat element cut, but it works and it's pretty short. Advanced game is good, adding in the elements removed from the standard game, especially like the way 'events' are handled.Definitely not 'civilization' or 'civ-lite'. It's a card game with a civilization theme - there's more micromanagement than in civ (more like the computer version with happy people etc). I like the draft mechanic for getting the cards, I like the limited resources and difficult choices and the way each civilization quickly diverges as different cards are picked and different routes to victory selected.I can see downtime being a problem with some with 4 players - but as a 2 player it's great and probably best with 3. Military aspect is interesting - you need some military might, but if you use it then you make yourself weaker and then a target for the 3rd person - so it's not just a case of get ahead and roll over the opponents.

All in all - like it a lot. Main 'missing' bit for me is there's no trading between players - but with the player numbers 2-4 that's not surprising, you need more for a trading game to really shine.

Not sure about balance though - 1st player seems a real disadvantage, and now we all know what we're doing we haven't seen player #1 win in a multiplayer game Considering tinkering with start and end game to fix the problem.

Played once 3 hours brought us about half way through 2nd age. I LOVE this game! Would play it all the time if everyone else was willing.

Had built myself a very comfortable lead thanks to Genghis and hordes of cavalry - would I be able to maintain the lead through the next age under a different leader? Would have played this well into the night to find out. It really was a case of getting totally immersed in the game, of having no idea bow much time had passed. Would recommend 4 player for it's epic scope - provided everyone has a day to spare to play. Have great hopes for this as a 2 player. I LOVE THIS GAME! Need to play it again soon - this may become my first 10.
Edit: I hand out 10 ratings like jelly babies now, but will patiently wait to actually play this again before upgrading. Can never bring myself to pay the asking price to actually buy this game, the damn thing is never on any kind of special offer.
