Possibly my favorite 2 player abstract. The cannibalism option and surprisingly seamless transition between offense and defense make it so I still find myself experimenting with new strategies.

(However, I'd probably rate the 3 and 4 person gameplay only a 2/10 or 3/10.)

Very close to the perfect "heavy" abstract game. There's just a slight problem of stalemate near the end.

Got all the bits. Would like another 3 sets worth of bits, so that I can have a choice of 4 colors for the two-person game.

Heh, I only have one copy

Only reason it isnt rated higher is because I dont get to play 2 player games often. Highly Underrated. Easily accessible abstract game. Its not a startrek prop only...

One of those games that I will always save from the thrift store despite having numerous copies.

Besides being an abstract among the best, with the bonus of allowing more players (avoid three-player games, though), this is certain to draw attention due to its polished looks.

Quite easy to learn, but is takes a few tries before you master it to a higher degree.
I like it best with two players.

I don't remember how we got into it, but a friend and I played the hell out of this game sometime in high school. We signed up for the "Terrace Times" newsletter and even came up with varriants of the game and sent them in to the creators/publishers. To this day I have a hand-written letter from one of the game's designers where he responded enthusiastically to our variants.

There is a version of this game floating around out there somewhere with black and white pieces (and maybe a different sized board?) that I would LOVE to get my hands on.

Rating is for the 2 player game. With more players, it shines a lot less. The game is a solid abstract. With all pieces having the exact same movement it's quite easy to read-ahead, so this game will appeal to fans of chess or checkers. At the same time it's quite difference since your pieces gain in power as they climb up the terraces. This is another great example of a "few minutes to learn, years to master" game.

Didn't actually remember how intriguing this abstract is. A real good offense / defense system whereby you must constantly try to keep on the offensive to keep the upper hand (much like chess). Seems easy right from the beginning but slowly evolves into a real challenging abstract. I'd say this is up there with some of my favourite abstracts. It's obvious the rules weren't just written for the sake of a game; they were carefully thought out to make a solid abstract. Only four moves can be made, but two ways to win help keep the tug-of-war consistent throughout. Plus, its futurism look just adds to the whole experience. GIPF series games might be purer, but rarely does a 3D game like this (that uses the elements of 3D in a brilliant way) come out so well.

So far really fun with the guys at work. It's the type of game that leaves you thinking about different strategies, and what you could have/should have done to influence the outcome. For some reason, I have an aversion to chess, but this game is nicely designed and has a cool feel to it as you climb up the terraces to gain higher ground on an opponent, or decened in an effort to get your "T" to the other side. My rating will most likely go up unless I burn my brain out on this game and can't post anymore.

After several plays, have been having fun with this. Much more engrossing than checkers but not actually much like chess at all, as some comparisons have been drawn. Very simple rules and some nice variants suggested here as well. A well designed game here with robust minimalism applied to good effect.

Picked this up at a thrift store and was pleasantly surprised. It's a fun abstract game that has hit the table between my brother and I quite a few times. Interesting pure strategy that seems to reward multiple play styles. Also, the board/pieces just look cool which would explain its appearance on Star Trek: TNG back in the day.

Haven't played with more than two players yet.

The extra dimension really does mess with your head. I've found that typically the newbies almost always win against the people who have played a few times and think they know what is going on.

The initial instincts that an experienced gamer may have for this game are probably wrong.

Very unique looking abstract strategy game. I had the older 8x8 version with the grey board. Seen on Star Trek: TNG, no doubt for it's interesting appearance. It also plays well although with 4 players things can get a bit chaotic.

I'd play this more if it was just left out, but its physical size out-shadows its depth, so it stays hidden at the bottom of the shelf.
