Great, great game of nearly absolute information. Tokens and pieces look really good, and the idea is very different from other games. Very "negative" game, your people will die...
Try the solo variant that you can find on the Geek. It is really worth playing.

Rating up from 8 to 10.

This is one game which, although it has fairly simple mechanics, requires a few plays in order for the richness and elegance of the design to show through.

I would now rate this game right up there with Puerto Rico and above Notre Dame.

Agonizing decisions, unique mechanics, and a lot of fun. Best game of Essen 2007 (though I haven't tried Agricola yet). My early prediction for a Spiel des Jahres nomination, it's really very simple, but too heavy a game to be a winner (remember, Maharaja was nominated)

Excellent Game! Played it twice back to back - tons of strategy - brutal but fantastic! Update: Played it twice back to back again and wanted to play more!!! So many ways to create points and perhaps victory. I'm hooked!!! Update: I've never played a game 4 Times back to back before! WOW! Definately the best I've played in a long time. I can't wait for the english version to come out - or at least for the game to come to Canada so I can pick it up! Increased to a 9.5 Update: played it twice again. Update: Fantastic! Got Our High Score of 119! Woohoo! A game that truly deserves a 10 in my book, I have never played a game this much and had this much want to play more! Update: New high score - 121* (3 player)Update: 121 in 5 player now as well!

Update: Haven't played this for a bit. Like catching up with an old friend! Fanastic - Other than chess quite possibly the best game I own!

Very good and well-balanced game. Because of changing order of the events, it will be everytime a different game. It's important to play the right persons at the right time. I made some mistakes at first play, but that makes it challenging to play it some more. This game has everything to become a 10.

Well, now it's a 10 : every turn though choices to make.

ALEA scores again with this: what a challenging balancing act between investing in generating victory points and preventing bad things happening to you. Accept your losses or playing safe? Very tense as an early lead doesn't mean anything.
Furthermore this scales extremely well: obviously it is different playing with 5 than with 2, but always fun.
This game requires building up experience so make sure you don't mix new players with experienced ones.
The "play-by-web" implementation on MaBiWeb is truly excellent [and allows me to at least play this wonderful game frequently - I only log F2F games though].

Awesome game that has you on the tip of your seat the whole time. Although it seems mainly about preventing losses, there are good opportunites to build things up, too. It'pretty harsh for first-time players, but even then, they'll come back for more. Alea's best since Puerto Rico.

This is a devilishly well balanced game with a cruelly punishing array of choices at every turn, and lots of opportunities for player screwage. The theme comes across quite well also, given that it's basically a resource conversion game.

Blown away by this game in my first play. Look forward to playing again and expect the rating might only go up. The game bascially tries to beat you down while you try to keep your head above water and score a few points here and there. Brilliant turn order mechanic too, really makes the game.

After a total of four plays, I think this game is fantastic. Yes, it is quite brutal in the sense that you are going to have to lose some guys, but there are just so many tough decisions and seemingly many different ways to win.

When I was first being taught ItYotD, my friend mentioned that afterwards I wouldn't want to play Notre Dame again. I chuckled at this because I was a fan of Notre Dame. But afterwards, I found that to be true, Notre Dame seemed... kind of one dimensional... after experiencing Year of the Dragon.Unlike Notre Dame, almost everything is visible in ItYotD. The only unknown is how the actions are going to be grouped. So you are more in control of your destiny, unlike Notre Dame where you have to take what your opponents draw and give to you. There also seems to be a wider variety of possible winning strategies than Notre Dame (though some claim that the first turn double dragon privilege is a dominant strategy).

After my 11th play I had to up the score to 10. Few games with such simple rules acomplish that depth of gameplay, diferent strategies and such tension and fun at the same time. One of the best of all time.

One of the best games around. Extremely well balanced and good with any number of players. I used to play and win this often pure tactically (short time actions), but now - after many losses - it seems that the best way to win this is to play it strategically (long term), but you have to stick to it till the very end.

WOW! What a *brutal* and challenging game this is! A lot of preparation is needed to overcome the disasters and casualities that come your way. Careful planning is essential to having success. I believe this game is an improvement over Notre Dame (a good game in its own right). There is minimal luck with several disastrous elements and strategic paths. In terms of the game's depth vs. playtime, this title offers the best bang for the buck that I have seen thus far.

Players manage money, actions, palaces, people/helpers, initiative, and future events all while trying their best to figure out the most efficient method of grabbing victory points. I disagree with the comments stating this has little interaction. I find it has quite a lot of it. While there is no way to "attack" someone, the interaction involves monitoring relative position on various aspects with plenty of opportunities to royally screw your opponents!

Mistakes are unforgiving - but please don't let this deter you from giving this game the chance it deserves. Stay with it and I think you may find some very interesting dynamics at play here. It's such a treat to experience an aggressive game with clever mechanics and a "painfully" rough system. No doubt this is a "gamer's game" - and it's a delightful one! May be the best games to be released this year, and is climbing its way to reach my personal Top 10. Grade: A+

Game mechanics are superb. Slick and clean. This game brings a lot of tension and competition since there are so many things to do but so little time. And the game is not very forgiving. So its a careful sprint to victory. It doesn't take too long and experienced players will be able to play this game quickly, since there are not too many options each turn.

What I like is that this game doesn't need cards to create complexity. Your own situation, and that of your opponents is always very clear and easy to oversee. Nothing hidden, everything is open on the table. Still this is a game of great depth.

Because for each game, the events are ordered differently, each play poses different problems and opportunities.

Typically a game that you need to play often to get better.

Game can be played (and is fun) with any number of people up until 5

[ESP] Gran, gran, gran juego de Feld. Realmente está bien diseñado. Casi 100% estrategia. Debes estar atento constantemente a lo que hacen tus oponentes y planificar con varias jugadas de antelación. Un error puede llevarte del triunfo al fracazo.
Absolutamente recomendado ;o)
