Very clever mixture of cards and traditional gaming, rules were bad but the excellent Walt Mulder has saved the day, needs some thought as to ergonomics.

Cards are very atmospheric and the game generates a cracking narrative.

Very atmospheric game that generates the feeling of the Bulge. My game went down to the wire and I suspect that most would. Throughout the game both players will think they are struggling while their opponent always seems to have the upper hand.

Good looking cards, but it can become a bit chaotic on the table.

Thanks to Walt Mulder with regard to the rules and FAQ's. Anyone who tried and gave up with the original rules should try again with the set posted on BGG.

Interested in topic, and encouraged enough by comments that Walter Mulder fixed what certainly seems to be a badly written rule book. This is one of those games for which you have to ask yourself, "How much time am I willing to commit to figuring out the rules and rules questions that I'm going to have?" And then, "Is all that time worth it, given how good I think the game is?" It's certainly an individual question. For me personally, I spent hours upon hours reading the published rulebook, then Walter Mulder's version (which, although very good and one which makes the game playable, still has some gray areas), then checking Q&A postings, then writing out my own capsule summary of things to remember; then going through the decks and matching them to the maps they're supposed to go on (by all means, print out the maps available through grognards.com and available on the "NUTS!" listing on BGG). After all that, after a few playing sessions, I felt as though the game plays well and is no more than of medium complexity for a war game--it just FEELS like it's medium-heavy due to all the brain work I had to do to figure it out. The issue with the rule book is not so much that it's badly written, but that it's underwritten. To that extent, Mulder's terrific work makes the game understandable and playable. Of war games with which I'm familiar, I'd rank this game with "Lightning: Midway" as having a rules set that's significantly underwritten, yet it's good game design that's definitely worth learning and playing. The game does give the feel of, at the outset, superior German forces that badly need to quickly push back American forces and exploit any gaps they can create. This is done by a combination of special cards (in the one-deck game--there are two 150-card decks--the German player draws 3 cards for each of 14 turns, then, if the game continues to its full extent, draws 1 last card for a final turn) and, potentially, mondo dice rolls, the number of which is affected by terrain and special cards in play. Although the design gives the feel of the campaign, especially with history-specific special cards, it's also designed to be a 'game'--that is, either side could win depending on strategy, card play and dice roll outcomes. I can also see this playing out in many ways, so it seems to me that, one, replay potential is good, and two, as one gains more experience, one's enjoyment and appreciation of the game is going to rise. Update, October 2013: after playing through two more games, I've upped my rating to "9": I've gotten past the grief caused by the poorly written rules and now really appreciate how good the design is, which I find remarkable for being card war game. Traded for, October 2012; by making the most of a 4-day Thanksgiving break from work, learned it by late November 2012.

A great card game on the Bulge marred by poor rules in need of examples. I remedied this with a re-write. Get both sets.

Get the "unofficial" rules available here on bgg ... and the other player aids ... otherwise ... trying to decypher the rules will leave a bad taste in your mouth.

In the main it is very good, once you've worked out that major von der Heydte problem. The reason why it doesn't work is that an immobolised Peiper can lay about him like a heavyweight gorilla, eliminating all adjacent units one space at a time.

Card game version of tactical warfare during WWII, specifically the Battle of the Bulge. Cards will be placed on a playing surface in a grid positions defined on the cards themselves, representing cities and major terrain features. Other cards represent the units that can be moved about, and events that can alter the course of combat. Dice do come into play.

Available in two editions: North and South.

Tried playing once and haven't tried again...

Own both North and South sets. Looks very interesting.

The graphic design on the card backs is grotesque.
