Half of the expansions included in this compilation I use as my de facto standard build of Carcassonne -- The River II and King & Robber (along with River I). If you have the choice of only one expansion for Carcassonne, I believe this is the one to have, as it provides the most enjoyable simple additions to the base game without adding anything strenuous to the rules.

Great expansion.

Count is a very interesting mechanic. Now closing opponents structures is even more tempting than it was with trade goods from Traders & Builders.

However note that this is not an expansion for everyone. It makes the game far more aggressive. In game like Carcassonne many players don't like it this way.

Pity that the Carcassonn city does not fit on entire edge (any) with Carcassonne: Wheel of Fortune but that is a problem with Carcassonne: Wheel of Fortune since it was released later. Luckily they can be connected just not with entire edges.

Both King and Scout are good. Now the game becomes more challenging. Should I close opponents structure (city or road) to gain King/Scout? Or try to block him/her to not close it at all?

Also Scout is yet another way of giving more power to roads.

River II is similar to Carcassonne: The River so my opinions are similar as well. It does not break meadows as much as I expected. And it adds some complexity to the rules by having two pools of tiles (first the river, then normal tiles) and additional rules of how the river can be placed (no U-turns and so on).

On the other hand the river itself looks nice after the game is finished.

Maybe it would be interesting to play with the river tiles (possibly more then one set) mixed into normal pool of tiles. I have to try it out.

Cult is fine although it often happens that we forget the rule forbidding to place a cult place or a cloister next to two opposite tiles. We rarely see fight between heretics and monks and except for those two things this is just like cloister. So nothing new.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

Count, King and Cult expansion. The Count element forces players to consider the consequences of trying for quick points with little cities and roads.
The Cult is fun and probably the most thematic element in any Carcassonne game.
The King and Robber, usually good for about 7-10 points each, can a big difference in a close game.
