The PERFECT wargame!

Short, intense, blocks AND card-driven--what more can I ask for?

Great example of the block game, and now the standard that I judge others against. It has everything you want in a concise package.

This is another nice addition to the Columbia block gaming tree. There are some nice new elements introduced here, particularly the Levy addition to the cards. I also like the need to keep a unit in a city to maintain control and allow new reinforcements, which prevents a big stack from just pushing through each VP city. The battles are pretty much the same as other titles so you can get going very quickly if familiar with the Columbia block system.

I think the map really makes the game play well, having roads linking cities rather than areas like other block games. The setup really forces the Caesar player to get going to avoid an early defeat.
The setup also creates a good environment for multiple paths to victory which is nice initially but not so sure long term it creates good replay value.

Interesting strategy game. It seems to favour the player who is Caesar however.

Excellent Block game... really gives a great feel for the Roman Civil war.

Probably would not want to invest in shipping to trade for this. However, I'd consider it as part of a multi-game trade or something like that. LOW Priority.

I rank it a 7, because it is fun and a step above Quebec 1759 in depth and complexity. It's not a particular area of historical interest, but it's interesting enough to get me to play.

I'm not sure I like the event cards in this one as much as in Hammer (which is almost the same game, frankly, but with kilts.) In my one game of this, three of the five turns ended abruptly due to simultaneous event cards being played. That made for a short game and an anticlimactic ending (note that this turned out to be a mistakenly executed rule, so I'll have to play again to adjust my opinion accordingly.)

I'm not sure I like the theme of the gods intervening, or is that just window dressing for "random" events. I don't know. In any case, the events seem overpowered to me.
