A lovely tile laying game where you can actually plan ahead, unlike Carcassonne. Somewhat light player interaction, though it's crucial to keep in mind what your opponent is likely to do. I like 2 player games with the advanced rules best. Atol is nice too. With all the variations, it's like having 3 or 4 games.

An interesting and challenging tile selection mechanism (the ship on the 4 x 4 grid) makes this a more enjoyable tile-laying game for me to play than Carcassonne.

Very good meaty filler. Has the island fitting of vikings with the card drafting of Darjeeling but more elegant than either of those.

This has become a favorite for my wife and me when we just want to play something quick. For whatever reason, we never got into Carcassonne, so I think that this fills that tile-laying nitch for us. Love the theme and the pretty bits. We always play with the mandatory ship movement variant.

I don't seem to tire of this. On or offline it's a great game, best I think with 2p and I love the variations and double-sided board meaning much replayability. I wonder if there will ever be an expansion?

Fun game. Pretty islands, shells and boats.

Easy to teach. Enough choices to keep it interesting.

Round and round the tiles we go. Palm trees mean this end up. Has some strategy in denying tiles to your opponent. More tactical game when two-player.

A hint of Carcassonne comes with this game (with the same addictive quality), yet a bit lighter. Nice looks accomplish a pleasant game, the island theme is cute, gives you a summer feeling. I liked it, it's one of those that works really well just for 2 players, too. There are advanced player rules which create a bit more tension.

A very interesting simple tile placement game that (in its so-called advanced version) gives you tight constraints for both which tiles you can draw and where you can place them, to create a tense game.

Production: Wonderful, simple tiles. The huts, trees, and canoes help make the board feel inhabited (I don't want to build this archipelago unless someone's going to appreciate it).

Play: A few bits of Kupferkessel Co. and Take It Easy mixed together with Oceania. Several different interesting scoring possibilities. So far I dislike the variant using the boat, whereby one is limited to the adjacent squares for placing a piece. Between canoes and spending sea shells, my opponent has enough flexibility that I find it quite difficult to anticipate possible moves. (3+2+3) (1 play)

Cross Kupferkessel Co. with Vikings, two of my favourites, and you have a neat and enjoyable 30 minute affair that I was always going to like. Like Vikings, you're gathering tiles and forming islands with them on your personal board, but the scoring is woven onto the tiles themselves, collecting palm trees, huts, leis, shells or ship symbols. To get tiles, rather than a cost-wheel, tiles are layed in a 4x4 grid, and you move the boat around the outside Kupferkessel style to a row/column that you want to pick a tile from. The first tile in the row is free, but each tile further away costs more hard-to-come-by shells. You can also move to a further row/column by paying out more shells if it's worth it and you can afford it. So, interesting choices to make each turn on whether to take freebies or pay for more. One of the features / issues with the game is that all the good tiles go quickly, leaving mainly dross for the latter half of the game. Don't set your board up waiting for a miracle completion tile, as everyone will pounce on any half-decent tile from mid-game on, meaning luck increases. But I've nonetheless found it engaging and well suited to the 30 min jaunt niche and I'm sure we'll get a lot of play out of it.

This is a wonderful tile-laying game that also has a nice bit of resource management. Fairly light and easy to teach, Maori makes a nice entry to Euros.

Maori is reasonably priced and is family friendly. I recommend this game to anyone looking for something light that still offers some challenge. It's one of my personal favorites.

A tile collecting & placement game where the main feature is that tiles you can buy are dictated by the clockwise travel of a little boat around a 4x4 grid.

I’ve only played the basic game, not the two advanced variants. First play (3 players) was a little flat, next two plays (4 players) were very competitive.

If you're a meat-loving gamer that thinks that Carcassonne is merely milk suitable for gamer babies, then look elsewhere. But for the rest of us, Maori might just be the Mario Kart we're looking for in a board game, as a quick and speedy arcade like board game experience. If you want a Carcassonne fix on speed, without feeling that you're just getting Carcassonne Express, then this is probably the right game for you! A pleasant-looking, quick-playing, light-middleweight game that is ideal for families, children, and non-gamers - and has the potential to satisfy gamers looking for a quick two-player session with their significant other. Can be described as Carcassonne meets Vikings (with the addition of an Entdecker theme, and in a shorter and quicker form), but adds a form of resource currency for special actions. Has quite a bit of luck, but the quick game time plus tactical use of ships and shells to help overcome the luck of the draw and maximize your options for tile drawing is a simple but sophisticated mechanic, and makes the game for me. Two player game is best (only 15-20 minutes!), and allows for many tactical plays. Played 15 times in 3 days already! Now starting to try the more advanced variants for an added challenge.

After one play - 7. Let's see how it develops...

EDIT: Definitely an 8. Comparable to Carcassonne but with more tactics and thinking a few steps ahead. The "advanced" version seems a bit better balanced (in terms of scoring) but I still do not know, what the purpose of these little ships is. They just seem useless and obsolete.

Anyway - fun, short and pleasant entertainment.

EDIT: Now I know how to make use of these little ships. They make the game deeper and more tactical. Nice idea.

This game scales very well in terms of complexity/difficulty depending on which boards and rules options you use. Played a game with a woman and her three children (5-11), using the basic rules and they could all keep up and enjoyed the game.

I usually play with adult gamers using the first boat variant, and it is a decent challenge while still being light and quick.

Fun game. Played it with Charles (grey beard) and Cheryl and her husband. I won my first game of it. Would like to play it again sometime. Played it again (but lost this time). Still fun. Played it again (vs. Mr. Billington) and won. More fun with 3 or 4 players than with 2, though. Played it with John this time, and still think it's better with more than 2 players. Played two games with Charles (grey beard) and Brian (new guy) and still like it. Played two more games and definitely not as much fun with 2 players. Played it with Britta first (two games, I think) and then one game with both Britta and Joseph.

Have played with 2 or 3 and also played with full 5, all without feeling crowded. That's nice.

Basic mechanism and suitable duration allow easy entry for non-gamers yet shells and canoes provide pleasant strategy choices for others with higher skills.

++++

Draw a tile on your turn, place it on your playing board to assemble island formations that will be scored. Some tiles must have a specific orientation, horizontal or vertical. Tile drawn is determined by a marker that moves around the perimeter of a 4x4 visible grid.

Having separate player boards doe not simply mean this is solitaire. You are engaged in watching new tiles drawn and calculating whether a particular one will be obtainable on your turn.

Added opportunities for strategy come from managing your inventory of Shells and Canoes - which are spent to give added flexibility to obtaining desireable tiles.

One of the great 2010 discoverings. Give Maori a try!

This is not another Carcassonne clon. This game is original and really good. OK, is not a gamer's meaty game but a great family oriented game. Really enjoyable. I'm liking it more and more each time I play it, as good as others more famous (and better ranked) family games.

Delicious as a 2 player game because is more controllable. Don't play it with more than 3 players, you can get a wrong and false impression because this can be extremely chaotic.

After you learn to play the basic game, try all the variants... you'll never get boring because there are many ways to play Maori.

For what it is -- which isn't much -- Maori is an excellent game! Largely multiplayer solitaire, you're collecting tiles and placing them on your board to create a grouping of islands. The basic game is fine for children (and I have played with a five year old who beat me legitimately). Jump right into the advanced game which creates a puzzle of placement and movement. Also, ignore the English ruleset which says that tiles must be able to connect. Instead, refer to the German ruleset which allows for improper placement during the game with the recognition that these misplaced tiles will all be swept away at endgame.

Picked this up at a Half Price Books on a whim and turned out to really like it. While the game is basic in design, there is definitely some deeper strategy in using your shell currency to move that ship just out of the line for your opponent or forcing them to have to make some quick decisions. Would definitely like to play this with more players though.
