This is a really innovative design concept, light years ahead for its time. I had the game, but it was destroyed in the Great Flood of the Basement. I feel lucky that I found a copy in good condition.

1812 is a great combination containing both a hex map and an area map. This important napoleonic campaign can be experienced both ways here.

Two treatments of the campaign. A very fine game still interesting after all these years. Astonishing that this came out in 1972!

The single best wargaming experience. I sat horrified as my troops melted away with the snow as my Le Grande Armee trudged back to Paris.

A lot of potential.

Both games use the same supply system, but different movement and combat systems. The supply system can be confusing at times, but it works and it is pretty interesting.

The hex game was an adaptation of the mechanics of the *Leipzig*/*La Grande Armee* system. The resulting rules have some gaps and what feel like mismatched concepts. That said, they are clearer and easier-to-play than *Highway to the Kremlin*.

About 25 km/16 miles per hex, 10 days per turn.

The powerful insight of this game is that battle losses in the 1812 campaign were insignificant; it was desertion, attrition on the march, and outright starvation that decimated armies.

A classic of Napoleon's most critical undertaking that lead to his downfall. Retrace his disastrous march to and from Moscow. I like the hex version over the area movement. Both play well.

Interesting because of the attempt to provide both an area movement game mechanic and a hex movement game mechanic for comparison, the game had some other early innovations for it's time.

The system of depletion and pillaging for supplies hadn't really been explored as much at the strategic level as it was in this title before. It both worked and didn't work, proving to be half useful for learning about the logistical difficulties of running a war during the era in question, but it tended to also cause confusion during play because we found it a bit of a struggle to keep up.

Mostly though, I think they should have chosen either of the two mechanics and kept to it for the game, to get the system's other issues worked out. The game also made good use of available graphics for the time, and play aids, though back when this title was released, it was not easy to use multiple colors nor to print additional off sized parts.

We can not figure out which piece of trash to sell you, so let's sell you 2 and pay more. The hex game was just the old horrible Leipzig design with more colors. It still was an awful game.
The area movement wasn't to bad, but it used hidden movement and who would you find to play you, no one!!
Another "cookie cutter" game.

Rating for hex version. Looking forward to trying area version someday. I liked La Grand Armee better, but the supply modeling in this one was interesting.

In the early seventies, SPI discovered that AH's 1 or 2 games per year did not remotely satisfy gamers' demand. So they made a lot of games, some that are as much experiments in game design as anything else.

1812 comes as two games, one area movement/strategic, the other hex based. More than anything the contrast between them illustrates that the area movement is the right way to go for this scale of Napoleonic warfare
