Quite possibly one of the top five 'gamer's games' of the last several years. An excellent mix of resource management / optimization, competition, and strategy. A winner.

I have now updated my rating to a 10, as I find it nearly impossible to resist playing this game when I have the chance. The expansion maps are largely to thank for this - the good ones all add some unique elements and force players to examine strategies other than those that work well in the base game. This can be frustrating the first time through (before your brain realizes that what you're doing ain't gonna work) but is ultimately more rewarding - more game space = more replayability = more table time = better game.

Wonderful rich gaming experience. Tight economy, non-obvious network building. Spawned all the expansions it did which gives more options with the gaming system, but really, nothing wrong with the base map.

Works best with 4 players.

Fantastic game! Played a 4 player session recently that was exciting and very involving. This is a game upon which you have to focus your attention constantly. Some might call this brain burn, but I it's more like intense fun! Our session lasted about 2 hours...2 hours very well spent. Highly recommended!!...UPDATE: Played a 6 player game recently. A bit more chaotic than playing with 4 people, but still quite manageable and enjoyable!

Definitely the best train game out there and I think I have all the popular ones. I may have to lower my rating on the rest just to be fair to this game. There are some similarities to Volddampf. This game adds a fair number of new elements and it provides a very intense level of angst on how to manage with limited resources. It includes actual rail line construction, shipment of goods, engine upgrades, bidding for turn positioning and other elements.

Cash is very tight in the early game and makes every decision critical to staying afloat. Has some similarity to 18xx tile-laying, but similarites end there. A nice meaty game that is playable within three hours.

Design:- Incremental turn structure with rule-breaking actions.
Execution:- An acceptable level of chaos injected into a defined structure.
Experience:- A thoroughly engrossing game which leaves players suspended up to that climactic turn.
Presentation:- Graphically bland but functional.

I really didn't think this one would be as good as it was. I was very worried at first that the rule for player elimination would upset things, but now I can see that rule is obviously there just to prevent players taking ridiculous risks and starting again without any real penalty (which is what would happen if we allowed players to do so). With the elimination rule, players have to watch their tight capital isn't dwindled away on player turn order bids, excessively expensive track building, or careless early engine upgrades.

I expected this game to be less exciting, but it's touch and go all the way. More plays have pushed this up to a ten for me from nine.

I like this game more with each playing; however, a game is easily ruined by one player's inexperince or lack of skill. So much has to happen right from the start and continue building each turn. And positioning on the board is a major aspect of the game, creating opportunities for yourself while limiting those of your opponents, watching the distribution of resources carefully so you don't come up short at the end while someone else is allowed to go unchallenged across the board with an abundance of unshared resources.

An outstanding railroad game. Players issue shares to build tracks between cities and move colored cubes to cities of the same color. This generates a steady income compared to the shares that must be payed dividend and gives negative victory points. Oddly this income depends on crossing as many city-city links as possible, limited by your engine level, and not distance between cities. In fact, the most profitable travel can be between 2 neighboring cities through several, more distant, cities. That does not disturb me though. The simple way money and costs are created, the bidding for turn order, the choose of private privilage for each turn and the track laying makes the game a winner. Set in the "Age of Steam" & Mid-West USA, the game is so generic that it can be set anywere and anytime (check the expansions and the PDF-file for random maps contributed by Richard Irving). This replay ability pull this games rating to a 10.

Although I don't have enough experience of other older train games, I can clearly understand why Age of Steam is such an innovation over its ancestors. Every part of the game works really well with each other, and everything makes sense too. The expandability(we have seen several expansion maps so far) is a big plus too. Each expanded version all works well; a slight change of rules often gives the game a totally different feel.

Great game, with lots of interesting stuff. The auction is really well implemented, and the question whether to issue that extra share or not makes for crucial decisions during the early turns. Money is very tight, but after the first play, it's hard to go bankrupt. And the random setup provides for excellent replayability.

Phenomenal train game. Emphasize to new players just how tight money is at the beginning of the game, and how costly mistakes are early in the game. Update: After more plays, this definitely gets a 10. I would play this any time, it's just that good.

So much analysis, so little time... Unlike others, I don't have an issue with the severe bankruptcy effects. Just sell more stock fer chrissake! I enjoy the tight parameters for turning a profit and the many complex decisions, but found that can lead to a lot of downtime with too many analysing players. Best played with 3-4 "fast & loose" players.

This is a very enjoyable railroading game. It plays in about 2 hours and features gut wrenching decisions most of the way.

Also features almost no luck in play (except for the replenishment of goods and set up), but just enough to keep the game from suffering stereotyped play.

Brilliant!

Played only a few times but it is very good. I read about it (here on bgg) and got high expectations and was not disappointed. I am a 18xx fan. AoS is a perfect game to introduce experienced gamers (playing Puerto Rico etc) to this type of game. But it also stands out on it's own. It is slightly lighter than 18xx and should be playable in 3 to 4 hours. Just can't wait to play it again!

An intense, cutthroat economic game with a small splash of luck. It has only gotten better and better as I've played it more, and the expansions have really helped it avoid growing stale. The original game (Rust Belt map) plays best with 4 or 5 players, and the expansions allow the game to scale well from 3 to 6.

If I'm going to give any game a 10 it has to be this. Strategy, tactics, balance, depth, player interaction. It's got everything and all in 2 hrs. The base game has loads of replayability and is worth the rating on it's own ... and then they go and throw in all those extra maps thereby creating such diversity. Outstanding.

My favourite game. It's intense, no game plays the same. Every time I play the game I'm really impressed by it's sheer possibilities of choices. Understanding the game system isn't that hard, but to play it well is! To get the best out of your turns is a game on it's own; where to build, which goods to deliver or withhold, when to upgrade your engine, how many to bid for turn order for getting the role you need, should I sell more shares...choices, choices! It's often called a gamers game, but I really think people who like to be challenged will enjoy this game. If you only play to win, it's a gamers game... but if you like playing a game because it starts possessing your body and soul than AoS is a must buy. After each session I've played I feel like I've been in a gamers rollercoaster. Every game it astonishes me how inventive other players can be, making moves or builds I didn't see. The first sessions AoS played with me, after that I've learned to play with AoS. That's the moment where players recognize it's sheer brilliance! AoS is the only game I've bought twice (the new second edition), a truly 10!
