My number 1 game. Pain is good, and this game brings the pain. Difficult decisions from the first turn through to the last.

Huh, can't believe I haven't yet rated one of my most played games yet, I just assumed I threw it a perfect score already. This is one of the pinnacles of the train game genre, which is quite saturated in fantastic games. I'd take off a point for the cube distribution uncertainty in the base game, but so many maps tweak this that the point is long moot.

The newer Steam is a fine game for people who prefer that kind of thing. But nothing beats the original. A great work-out for the brain.

Love martin wallace. tough game.
2nd play - still love it, need to play steam on hard mode to see if it's closer to being as good. economics are brutal.

Great game. I haven't bought it yet because I fear I would never get it to the table considering most gamers won't go for a game this cutthroat and unforgiving.

Good game, but has a very steep learning curve. I play a variety of games with a lot of people, often new players, so this one doesn't get played much. RRT is easier to teach and play, but I still like AoS a lot, particularly the "break even" point, despite the AP.

Most have been a tight game - provides many difficult decisions to make. Money is tight, auctions are critical so you can get the right role at a time. Good routes and deliveries can be stolen.. Lots of alternatives, figure the first few games are learning experiences to understand what is the value to assign to the turn order bid.

Wow, I wouldn't have believed it, but I liked this way better than Steam, primarily because there was more planning to be done in Age of Steam. In Steam, things just got ridiculous because you could totally screw over another player and then save yourself by parachuting some new cubes almost anywhere you wanted them. It's much easier to gauge others motivations in this game. Despite the tightness of money, Age of Steam actually seems like the less brutal game since people are much more worried about running their own lines. You're never going to go bankrupt in Steam but sometimes you'll wish you would.

Game in a Nutshell: Borrow money, lay track, and deliver goods to earn income and score the most points.

Played as: 3,4 player

Pros: Has a great blend of planning with some player and game unpredictability thrown in to make it interesting. The game is a stream of constant important tactical decisions where adapting as the game progresses is an absolute must. I love the constant interaction through the auction and into the building/moving goods phase when name-calling is almost obligatory. The best part is the satisfaction associated with taking your little train / handful of money, and grinding your way to building a large rails network, with a vastly upgraded train, that’s competing in a spaghetti bowl of other player’s tracks to hopefully turn the greatest delivery points.

Cons: Poor presentation values. The ugliest of all "Steam" games with poop-y artwork and the third edition plastic trains only seem to clash with the whole package. The gray-scale mats also look cheap. Needing a formula to tally the final score is kind of a drag. It’s not as natural of a flow to the game as I would have expected. A well presented but simple player aid would seem like a no brainer however is not included.

Other: It appears to me that way too much is made of the threat of going bankrupt early in the game. Any game explainer worth their salt should be able to easily avoid this with a little warning and minimal hand-holding. I thought the game was a little too wide open with three players and much preferred it with four as bumping heads became almost immediate. What keeps the game from scoring higher marks for me is that gameplay comes across as more of an ever-changing puzzle than a game that allows for creative tactics.

Best Use: When you need the most solid of train games.

A competitive and sometimes brutal game of constant debt! I somehow think that keeping track of shares and engine could be done a bit differently to make the information acessible by all players, maybe individual player mats? The maps are smaller than Railroad Tycoon, which I think is a plus. I also like the discs better than the little fiddly trains in RRT. In general AoS seems an easier game to play in terms of space and logistics (i.e. I find it hard to be sitting at one end of the table and building in the Northeast in RRT.)
