My personal favourite. Never had a game go over 4.5 hours. Don't understand how others claim it takes too long.

My rating kept going up the more I play this as this is definitely my favorite of the 18xx games. And now, finally a 10 rating because after 5 plays there is no doubt that this is worthy of that rating. Not as mean as 1830, but money is super tight! The fact that the game unfolds differently every time and that there are so many dramatic moments during the course of the game means that the replayability is higher than say 1830. This game is light years ahead of Age of Steam if you like tight money rail games with a debt element but I can't recommend this game enough if you think you might like the 18xx system and games. Fast and fun with three, stately and tight with four, and a real bloodbath with five or six players. Also works well as an intro to 18xx and is one of my all time favorite games.

18XX's are the ULTIMATE train games. They take a long time, but they're worth every minute of it, IMO.

1856 has lots of fun variations from 1830. The cash is much tighter as corporations receive funds only as shares are sold. Building towards a destination city is another interesting concept similar to that of 1870. The Canadian Government Railway (CGR) is a fun addition that can be used and abused. In many of our games, the player who sent the most nearly bankrupt corporations into the CGR, won easily. Other times, the CGR was a complete bust. Many, many ways to successfully play this game.

Upgraded to ten after 4 plays. What a wonderful game this is. Calculating the runs and performing +10 upgrades are annoying during the last operating rounds.

This was my second 18xx game, and it is my favorite one. Yes, I know that borrowing from the government is almost mandatory in this game, but so what? Several others games have almost-mandatory strategies (even in lofty Chess, you have king's pawn to e4 --- and yes, I know there are alternate openings).

Feels just like 1830 with more interesting options. Not as elegant at 1830 but better because of realism of loans.

Economic games without loans are totally unrealistic. Borrowing money is a crucial part of business.

An awesome rendition of an awesome system. Nationalization of railroads is a nice option for making use of failed rail lines. The 18xx system for me gets a 10, and this is the best version I've played so it gets a ten as well. This 10 is for the system as a whole, just as is my 10 for Age of Steam. I'll skew the rest of these games lower until I find a version I like more than 1856. This, of the few I've played so far, is the best.
