A great design full of simplicity yet cramming in a lot of history. The use of divisions and a simple buyt effective combat system actually allows this topic to be played. It has not quite got the meta-game right, but it is a puzzle as to how one would do that.

Ben Knight distils situation into simple games like no other. Great design with amazingly short rules; the best game on Jutland. Needs a house rule to repeat the curiosity that carried both sides into the battle but otherwise fine.

Jutland playable in a day. This streamlined design makes you the fleet admiral instead of having to be a ship's captain times thirty. The trade off is no individual ship counters. I have played the game. The trade off is worth it.

A marvellous, clever fleet game that by organising ships into divisions neatly rids us of all the fiddly detail of your usual fleet action titles. This scale forces players to concentrate on admiralling rather than bean-counting. If there's a weakness, it's that of simulating enough of the fog of war to exactly reproduce the battle. Nontheless, this is an excellent naval game that seems to generate much of the flavour of Jutland.

A surprisingly nice little game. Captures the feel of WW1 Naval comabt quite well despite its simplicity.

Rating is for playing Dogger Bank scenario (Command 11).

Using my posted variant.
Basic game as 2 pages of rules -- 2 pages of charts.

I've played Dogger Bank twice and the Germans usually kill 4 or 5 British ships and lose 1 or 2 themselves.

A lot of detail packed cleverly into a small game.

A nice attempt on the naval engagement between Britain and Germany, trying to break the Avalon Hill's myth about the battle, upon which a game of the same name was based.

Elegant system that focus on the 'Admirals view of the battle. One flaw is that the torpedos are too effective, reflecting the combatants fears not the weapon's real capabilities. However a house rule- (roll a die for each torpedo hit, 5, 6 means ship is really disabled, 1-4 means the ship is out of formation for 1-4 turns), will fix that

Not bad...for a magazine game. Fairly simple. Pick it up if you're a WWI naval warfare fan.

Revised rating - instead of knocking it for simplicity, it gets a bonus!

Interesting and simple game that encourages bluffing and laying "traps" for your opponent. I like the idea of the movable maps- when you run out of room by exiting a map, pick up one of the opposite map segments that is unused, and simply place it in the new location. Reminds me of the game Mississippi Queen, where river tiles behind you disappear and new ones appear in front of you. The advanced rules add torpedoes and light vessels. The counters themselves are rather plain jane, as is the map, but it's still perfectly adequate. The counter density is very low in this game, making it a breeze to set it up. And the basic rules are so simple that even non-wargamers could pick them up rather easily. I'd have rated it higher if it weren't for the ho-hum graphics and the fact that replayability is a bit suspect. I'm not sure how many times I'd want to play out the same scenario.

A nice simple naval fleet-action game, easy to play and teach.
The basic game has 4 pages of rules, and uses only the capital ships, and their heavy guns. The advanced game adds the lighter escourt vessels, light guns, and torpedoes (fired by the lighter ships only).
Neither game can be played solitaire well, which is a pity, but despite the size of the battle, this game makes it easy to play with little bookkeeping. Damage is all or nothing: either your hit sinks one of the 2-4 ships each counter represents, or it doesn't. But it's fun and easy and doesn't require a huge table.

Therer's only one scenarion. The system is intended to make big fleet actions playable, and does so, but it can't be used to make scenarios for smaller actions involving less than a dozen ships on each side.
I'd love someone to do a Tsushima scenario using this system though!

I know lots of people love this, but it just didn't click for me (and I'm a fan of both the subject and Ben Knight's Midway game). Lots and lots of die rolling. No named capital ships. I'd happily give it another chance though.

Does a fine job of giving a big picture view of this massive clash of fleets in a reasonable amount of playing time, but the result isn't a game that I find especially interesting or flavorful.

Ship vs ship surface combat games....hard to see the appeal. Roll to hit. Roll for armor penetration. Move a hex every now and then. At least this one is simple and fast. I prefer carrier battle games.

Sounded like it would be a lot of fun, but the couple of times we played it turned out to be a contest of who could roll the most 6's. Kinda boring.
