I know it is a glorified version of Oh Hell, but this is so much more fun than just writing a score on paper.

I can't think of a better intro to the trick-taking genre (especially for young families) than this one. I like the fact there is no negative scoring, only blocking or going back to the cave if you misjudge your bid in the waterfall section, instilling essential hope for trailing players. Best with 4 to hopefully disperse smaller movement, and we skip the shaded rounds to speed up play. Playing with more than 4 makes the game overstay its welcome, and the expansion Grand Canyon may be a better option.

Great game. Language free, so easy to teach to anyone who knows how to follow suit and what a trump is. The different deck (5 suits each of values 1-10) makes calculating probabilities easier, but provides a nice change from normal decks. And there is a reasonable amount of strategy in bidding and racing the canoes.
Nice board, and quality cards mean it replays well without deteriorating.
This is very popular with my games group.

When I first received this game, it looked like all it would be good for was teaching our daughter about trick taking and trumping games in a simple way, with a bit of extra fun in the race element. Have now had 7 plays over 1 6 month period and have had to raise my opinion, and rating. It really is an interesting game...we have played from 3 to 6 players and all have been tense and fun. We have added one small house rule....we start with each player having 1 card and moving up rather than 8 and moving down. The reasoning here is purely that it is easier for new players to understand the trick taking/trumping concept when they have fewer cards in their hand. With experienced players we would start with 8. While this is not a game that we play every week, it is one that will hit the table regularly. Since we first introduced it to our club, 2 others have also purchased it....this shows how well it has been received.

This game combines bidding on how many tricks you will take during card play with moving your canoe on the board. This is one I really like as Oh Hell is one of my favorite trick taking games.

I like most trick-taking games, especially the ones that add a twist without getting too crazy. Canyon does this, combining an Oh Hell/Wizards type of variable-deal bidding mechanism with a two dimensional scoring track. The latter might be a little more than is necessary, but it adds some real theme and appeal to the game, which is light & fun. (The expansion Grand Canyon is ok, but becomes too much of a good thing at best. I'm not real fond of special powers.)

Plays best with maximum number of players. Otherwise there is not enough blocking. Don't play if you don't like trick-taking games. The repetition will annoy you. I love them and I really like this game. Unluckily, I seem to be the only one enjoying this while it outstayed its welcome for everybody else in my last play.

I love trick-taking cardgames and collect them. I actually bought this as a collector and not as a gamer, as this basically is Wizard but with a scoring board with a pasted on theme. Then when I played it for the first time I realized that the scoring board actually brings loads of tactical options to the game I started to appreciate it as a trick-taking game in it's own right. Now it's one of the games we play more often and the number one game to lure other people in to the trick-taking genre.

Canyon (without the expansion) is so simple that it's easy to approach it as just a kid's game. This is the simplest trick-taking game you can find, folks. But the board is nifty and the series of easy decisions makes this is a nice way to pass time on a lazy Sunday afternoon. A reprint with HD artwork, Grand Canyon packed-in, and 3-D pieces would sell quite well.

I don't like trick-taking games but happen to like this one because it's more than just another trick-taking game. It's a racing game which uses the trick-taking mechanism as its engine. The part near the waterfall is especially fun. It can be played by 3 or 4 persons but with more players improves significantly.

[Original comment] This is a fun game. However, we did not care for the original rules regarding movement of the canoes. We have modified the rules considerably and find it much more enjoyable now.

May 2009 -- We still find this game fun, with our modified movement rules.

October 2011-- We only play this rarely, but we have fun when we do get it out. I can play it whenever someone wants to do so.

Canyon uses a trick-taking game in which players try to predict exactly how many tricks they will take. The number of cards in a hand increases and then decreases in size. A correct prediction gives your marker movement points around a scoring track depicted on a river in a canyon, whose main feature of interest is a section of "rapids" near the finish line where your marker will be "caught in the current" and sent back a few spaces if you go too many hands without a correct prediction.

Very clever basic trick taking card game my family loves and would recommend it for anyone!

I haven't played a set collecting game (i.e. rook, hearts) in a very long time but this game was a nice change of pace. Uses set collecting which uses a boat race to symbolize the scoring track except there is blocking and you get penalized for not bidding correctly on your trick taking toward the end so there is a little bit of a catch up mechanism. Good solid game if you are looking for a change of pace trick taking game.

Inital rating of 7.

Super "gateway" game.

A simple trick taking/bluffing game that uses a "race" as an interactive scoring track. This aspect is very light, however, this simple combination is a great way to get people into more advanced games.

Well, it's basically just Up and Down the River (Oh Hell!) with a board. Five suits instead of four change the bidding a bit, as does the scoring/movement mechanism, both before and in the rapids.

I found it added a fun factor to and already intellectually enjoyable card game.

Great Oh Hell variant with an interesting twist in the fact that a board (with little canoes) is used to keep track of the "score" of a player. Makes it feel a little like a boardgame instead of a card game.

Trick taking linked to a board game. The idea is nice, but I'd like more chance of falling off the waterfall and more chance of strategically slowing opponents down by getting in front of them.
