This is one of my favourite 18xx titles.
18Ardennes has been described as "18EU with the bugs fixed". This isn't entirely accurate, but there are many similarities: 15 minors auctioned at the start, minors turn into majors etc. But there are some important differences, which make Ardennes a better game, for example: minors can last to the end of the game.
Like 18EU, it is a game where route-building (and tokening) is just as important as buying/shuffling trains - you have to get both of these aspects right to win.
The one weak element is the start of the 4-player game. Adding the Lux (the 16th minor) makes it better than EU, but because the Lux is so useless it is still a problem.

Played some playtest games with five players. The rules for five can block players out of opening the major companies (painful). This should be remedied in the final version.

A fresh different 18XX. It has 1D stock prices, so it's on 1829 branch. But it's quite gamey in running the corporation. And I like the minor companies too. The downsides is the downtime. 1 OR is too long, because of the minor companies. Also, there are too many bonuses, while good, need a player aid, or it's easily forgotten. The 5 shares and 10 shares seems interesting, but quite useless in execution.

Specialties:
- 15 minor companies without privates
- Minor can merge into major, and assimilate
- Many run bonuses
- 1D stock market, and fixed 2 OR
- Not fully capitalized, only by selling shares
- Can convert from 5 shares to 10 shares.
- 4D train is unlimited range, but can only get income from 4 cities, and doubled.

Nice game but:
- 18eu is similar but faster (this one took us 7h with 5 players and 18eu only 4,5h)
- flat stock market (this is not bad but for me is another "+" for 18eu)
- you HAVE to liquid your company shares and buy a "diesel".
- not enough cross railroad tiles - there are many oportunities to block another players (even accidentally)

IMHO, the most intense, brain burning 18xx around. Forces cutthroat-ness whether you like it or not, as key cities get tokened out almost automatically. The limited number of majors companies makes the game decisions difficult. Played with 3, two times. It is important that a person does *not* get control of a majority of majors. Not for the faint of heart. Essentially, 18EU, made much more difficult and unfriendly. Good place to hone your cutthroat skills.

France - A flatter stock market than is necessary, and easier track options make the game good for beginners, but flexible company types and merger options keep the interest of the veterans..

It's generally good, certainly interesting, but it suffers from what seems to be too much chrome, and too many patches (incremental rusting for 2 trains but not for 3s?) and the balance of the final trains may be off (need more plays to tell).

The beginning is awesome, with all the privates, the endgame is slow and way too hard to calculate routes.

A slightly more advanced and intricate EU but it feels like the starting auction is most of the game.

The track laying is too aggressive and not in a fun-1830 way. Players basically start and grow up their own companies so not much in the way of stock shenanigans... it wasn't bad, but I wouldn't choose to play it again given another option.

Played a play test version at Dragonflight. I'm too inexperienced with 18XX to weigh in with even a provisional rating.
