Fun tile-laying game, a little the same, a little different from the original Carcassonne. The patterns that come out of this game have a different feel to them.

Carcassonne H&G is a massively addictive game. I've been a board gamer for quite some time (long before boards existed - we carved lines in the ground and stood between them for fun - okay, I'm not quite that old), and I know that Carcassonne WILL bring attention to board games from "the masses." I've already introduced this game to several people that now are INTO board games again. I tell them they're not geeky for converting over, but that's our little secret. If you already own the original Carcassonne, H&G is a very close relative in gameplay and appearance. It's different enough for me to justify buying it separately. I play both equally, but most all of my normal gaming group likes the original better. Quick games, varying gameboard, lots of strategy, some luck - well done.

Good game - nice variant on the original but have to watch out for excess tigers wrecking your final scoring of deer. My kids often co-operate on building a massive river system to trash me!

My favorite of the series. The fact that there is incentive to complete someone else's forest (city equivalent) sets this one apart.

I give this game a 10 for being very good on nearly all levels. It is small enough to fit in your pocket, quick enough to not take up your whole night, easy enough to teach anyone, and strategic enough to not get old even for seasoned players. An excellent gateway game. If you get someone to play this, they will enjoy it enough to play whatever you put in front of them next. I think the Scout expansion was weak, but I'm eagerly awaiting any REAL expansions they may decide to put out. This is a great game for 2-5 players. and changes a lot between 2-3 players due to the rules for sharing points on shared resources.

Great Game. Simple to learn, lots of strategising, interaction & a little luck factor to spice up a tight game that can be played in 30 mins. This is = Carcassonne + expansions!

A great addition to the Carcassonne family. If you don't have any Carcassonne games, I'd suggest the original for lighter gamers, or this one for more strategic gamers. All of the games in the series are excellent; this one is more complex. The game plays fairly differently than the original Carcassonne, actually: scoring is much more frequent, the board takes on a much different shape, and it's more unpredictable (no counting tiles).

I'm starting to notice a trend with the 10's I give out. They're almost all entirely my favorite couple's games to play with my significant other (can ya' blame me?).

H&G is the best Carcassonne I've played yet. It's certainly more eye-pleasing than the others and has the most streamlined scoring mechanics with just enough flair added in the bonus tiles. I really like the theme a lot too, much better than building an old city with farms and what not (snore). We tend not to pay much attention to score since the game is more fun to play as a means than to play as an ends. H&G has single-handedly got me looking at the other better themed Carcassonnes. Great game.

Lay tiles to extend regions, occupy the regions with your man, compete for dominance of the high value regions, score the points when the region is complete.

Even though it's a "my turn / your turn" game, once the players are familiar (coupla games) the turns are usually quick enough not to feel like down time. Most enjoyable with people who are not highly possessive.

Although I gave this a 10 because it is an excellent game, if you already have the original Carcassonne I wouldn't recommend buying it since it is practically the same game. The differences are very subtle, roads are now rivers, cities are now forests, farms are now meadows. Yes, there are a few minor differences about they way they are scored and a few other minor differences between the two games, but it's not enough to make it worth buying if you already have the original. If you don't have the original or hunters and gathers, I would strongly recommend buying one of them as they are both excellent games for both casual and hardcore gamers.

The best of the Carcassonne series. The additional tiles are fun to go for, the huts add some additional strategy, and the hunters tone down the farmers, which I believe are a bit too strong from Carcassonne.

Components: Doris Matthäus is a tough act to follow as artist, but Johann Rüttinger has done a great job. The tiles are of exceptional quality. The animals are easier to visually tabulate than completed castles are in the original.

Experience: More elegant than the original, this sequel to the original Carcassonne is easier to teach, easier to score, more intuitive, and just as fun to play.

The stone monument, allowing a player to claim a meadow, is too powerful. The addition of the bonus for closing forests, and the penalty for not completing forests or rivers at the end of the game, lends itself to smaller areas than in the original Carcassonne, which also means that there are frequent small scores rather than infrequent large scores. Adding fish to the rivers has a similar effect as adding inns to the roads in the original. Very satisfying to play, and of course the board looks wonderful when complete. It's fun to see all the animals mingle in the meadows.

This is my new favorite game! I have given up Scrabble (my longtime fav) for this game! I always want to play this game with my husband, and I think he gets tired of me asking him to play. It is such an easy game to play and we can play in the evenings when we are tired without taxing our brains too much. Definitely a fun family game!! We took it on vacation and our grown son really enjoyed playing this game with us.

My preferred version of Carcassonne. After two years of fairly regular play (a few times a month), I still will never turn down a game, and I can now confidently say that I don't expect this to change. A masterfully designed game that appeals to a wide range of gamer types, I find it to be fun and light, yet relatively deep, and always enjoyable.

Nice pace to game, parts colorful and well done. My first game, we helped each other into points trying to learn game. My son took the lead at start, i over took the lead 1/3 into game. About 2/3 into game he took the lead again and never looked back. Near the last 1/4 of game, i drew the temple tile, our meadows were huge, mine was one tile away from becoming his. I managed to link the meadows together with my last tile placement. Any game that comes down to winning game on last turn rates high in my books, though i do feel that temple card is overly powerfull.

This version of Carcassonne doesn't seem to get that much love, but it is my favorite one. It is, admittedly, not that different from regular Carcassone (and without any real expansions to go with it), but I find it much more balanced. Added bonus: non-gamers always seem to understand hunters much more easily than farmers.

My introduction to euro gaming. In my mind still the best euro game. I love the strategy of this version more so than any other carcassonne. I like the randomness of the bonus tiles. I think games work best if there is a little randomness, but not too much that can't be overcome, and I think this game has that nice balance. This is the game I use to introduce people to euro games. I like playing this with 4 players best. I also like it when each player plays an aggressive game.

Better then the original? Yes it is! Ever draw a road tile in Carcassonne and say "Oh great, ANOTHER stupid road." That does not happen in hunters and gatherers. The fish in the rivers (roads) make these tiles just as valuable as forests (cities). Also the extra turn mechanic from traders and builders is built right in! AND you can get a TON of points from a hunter (farmer) if you play your tiles right! If I want a long game of Carcassonne I go for the original and expansions, but most of the time I just play this.
