Holland is excellent with 3, as brutal as it gets, and Madagascar is awesome with 4 or 5, the logic of the auction changes quite a bit with the negative powers. This is the most impressive expansion set I've played for any game.

Unfortunately, there's a problem with the printing of these maps. The blue and purple cities are very difficult to distinguish. We marked the purple cities with purple Agricola workers to ease the problem.

[Madagascar] Wow, this one completely turns the game on its head - and I love that. The special actions have all been replaced with specific handicaps. Everyone must choose one each round, and they can be quite painful if you end up with one of the last choices. Throw all your usual Age of Steam strategies out the window, because these bad actions will require you to completely re-think the game. A simply brilliant, nasty, arch-villain of a map. If your group likes a tight, torturous game of Age of Steam, then you've got to get this one! Five players felt like the right scale here. Rating = 10. [Update] Also great with four players. Three players was still fun, but rates a couple points lower.

[Holland] Two changes here. First, either Urbanization or Engineer is unavailable each turn, in an alternating pattern. Second, building on the lowland areas of the map is not allowed for the first several turns of the game. Both changes are welcome on this map. The alternating unavailable role is one of the best systems I've seen for tightening up the bidding (which is needed for three-player maps). The mid-game land creation makes for a nice focal point, adding some nuance to the long-term planning. It also makes for a very tight early game, when passages are narrow and yellow cities are unavailable. Rating = 8 for three players, haven't yet tried it with four.

When rating two-map Age of Steam expansions, I always bias the overall rating heavily toward the better map, since that's the one I'll spend more time playing.

3p @ Holland.Very tight map! The poulders with the "correct" cubes distribution may put, even experienced players in a very difficult situation.

Madagascar: Perverse version with penalties instead of bonuses from the special actions and some of those actions are really, really nasty. The bidding was much more intense in this game than normal given the need to avoid really bad stuff. The map was quite open and cheap to build on though with 4 players. Much flatter & unwooded than I expected and hence easier to turn a profit than you'd expect.

Holland: Whereas Holland is a nasty, nasty map. Before the entry of Polder (which is most of the game), players are faced with a very cramped map effectively split into 3 (south, north and the central red cities). Connections between these 3 regions are limited. And while central might get a lot of cubes, its a narrow space in its own right and chock full of only red cities.
Urbanisation becomes very important and complex track placement will abound.
As a group, we pretty much screwed each other over on this map with heavy bidding for urbanisation & first build.
Note, this doesn't make it a bad map to play. Its fun if you're a masochist.

I have only played the Holland side with three players so far. The polders added some interesting decision-making and effected both early game strategy and tactics.Being in the right place once the polders became available was a key to success in our game at least.

Rating after one play of Madagascar with 4p. The 'bad actions' are an inspired piece of design that completely shakes up the base game while not completely wrenching it off the frame. That is - you can do what you want to, you just have to be prepared to do it a little differently (or pay through the nose for the privilege).

The map felt a little too 'open' with 4, which may have had something to do with the cube distribution, but I think this map would be an all-star with 5. Look forward to trying it out with that number, although it may take some time since our 'core' AoS group is at 4...

One play of Madagascar, 6 players: Madagascar is a very tough expansion to which you really have to adapt your way of playing. Challenging, but certainly not for beginners.rating 7.5
One play of Holland, 4 players. Played with Steam rules, works without any problem. Excellent map, I like the preparation for the opening of the polder hexes. The topography is not very correct and blue and purple are too much alike. Nevertheless, the gameplay is excellent with four. Rating 9.5

Good maps, but production not so great, with hexes cut off on the edges. Still very playable, but just a little annoying.

HOLLAND (3-4er)

1 play, 4er
Fun map! Mostly a basic map, with only a few changes -- available terrain, and action limit in the 3er game. The polder really divides the board into tiny areas, completely blocking away the yellow cities until very late in the game. The center of the board becomes a knot of track as you try to create long routes, especially since the 3 reds each get double production! You need to prepare for the turn when polder becomes available, which is kind of cool!

8/10

Setup
•2 cubes per city
•Remove yellow New City from game
•Place gray discs:
o3er: on 5th turn circle and Urbanize OR Engineer
o4er: on 6th turn circle
Choose Actions
• 3er: May not choose action with the gray disc.
Build Track
• Standard grass: green
• Polder: bluish green; treat as river. May not be built on until turn marker reaches the gray disc.
•Sea: blue; impassable.
End of Turn
•3er game: move the gray disc on Urbanization/Engineer to the other action.

Variant
During the setup, place one cube on each Windmill hex. Windmill hexes cost $5. When the polders are opened and when one player builds on the windmills, place the cube on the track, it can now be delivered. The Windmills hexes do not count for ONE income if players pass through them during the moving phase.

---------------
MADAGASCAR (3-6er)

1 play, 4er

Wow, what a cool idea -- all the actions are bad! They force you to totally change your approach to the auction/actions. Loco is no longer a no-brainer, since you can't build; urb isn't necessarily good, either, since you can only build one hex; etc. -- this is definitely NOT for AoS newbies! But game play wasn't quite as fun as I was expecting it would be: felt very limited in what you could do much of the game, but at the same time there seemed to be an excess of money: spending so little each turn (due to limited builds), we became profitable relatively early in the game. You would think bidding would be tough, but often there are several acceptable options (you mostly want to avoid being last or second-to-last). This may be better with 5?

8/10

Setup
•Use the included Goods Display and Actions
•2 cubes/city
Lock Actions
•At the start of each turn (and game), lock (7 – n) actions.
•For each action to lock, roll a d6 and start counting from the last action locked (start at left on turn 1), wrapping around if necessary. Place a town marker or convenient marker on those actions; unavailable this turn.
•Place 2 markers on the last action locked this turn (start counting from there next turn).
Actions
•Last Build: builds last
•Last Move: moves last
•Locomotive + No Build: may not build track
•Urbanization + 1 Build: may only build one track
•Slow Engineer: may only build 2 tiles
•Last Player: on next turn’s Auction for Turn Order, must pass
•High Costs: Must pay $4 + all normal costs in building
•One Move: only get one goods movement this turn
Build Track
•Grass: $2
•Hills: $3

Madagascar's Bad Actions are a mean twist. Holland works very well with 3 players: the map is restricted in the first half of the game to force competition and the availability of Engineer/Urbanise actions alternates making for some unusual tactics.

Madagascar - I love expansions that switch up the game on you. This one does that in spades - and it isn't pleasant. You have the opportunity to bid in an auction for your poison as all the actions spots are negative actions and you are bidding for the right to pick one that hurts you the least. Outside of that, game play is the same. There are certain poisons that actually won't hurt in the end depending on your network (IE - there is one where you upgrade your engine BUT don't get to build track).

Holland - have not played.

HOLLAND

The thing about three-player Age of Steam maps is that it's too easy for one player to pass in every player auction and still get something pretty decent in the role selection. Holland mucks things up by going between Engineer and Urbanize, blocking them from use every other round in the game. It slows things down a bit -- not only are players forced to adapt to that mechanism, but they also have to contend with half the possible urbanization actions -- and makes the game slightly less interesting. The polders surrounding the yellow cities, forcing them to stay out of play until about halfway through the game, is interesting, but when the goods come out in such a way that few other deliveries are possible, it gets too constricting. It's a neat idea, but it doesn't work as well in practice.
