Great game, simple mechanics and plenty of strategy. The bidding round is especially tense, and some tough decisions on what to buy/where to place. Has displaced El Grande as my game of the moment.

I actually have come to enjoy it more over time resulting in my current raising of my rating; something I seldom do. Love the auction mechanism. Sure there is some luck on card draw but hey, you need to deal with what you get...(no pun intended).

I still like this game after 10 years, but don't get to play it much. Definitely wants 5 players, though 4 can be ok. With 3-4 the first round is much more luck dependant as all provinces won't be in play. Also the camel rider tends to be more viable in 5 player match.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I like it. It's quite straight forward game, the mechanisms and strategies are fairly easy grasp, but mastering them is tad more difficult. Bumbeb the rating after playing it after a long break.

An excellent game with multiple paths to victory (or defeat), and plays particularly well with 5 players (less well with only 3). Extremely well balanced, and seems to produce tight games with skill and strategy being much more important than luck - which is present in the game but in a small way. Highly recommended!

Amun-Re is a very interesting resource development game with a fantastic auction system. One of its greatest offerings is that victory can be achieved along multiple roads. It's right up there with the greatness Knizia achieved in Tigris & Euphrates.

first game pretty good. will improve second game round when we knows it a bit better. actually, after a couple of games, i'm leaving the rating as is. I like the game, but it's not smacking with fun...it not bad...further plays have proved me wrong..this is another knizia gem that shines with 5..
UPDATE May 09. The more I play the worse (or better my opponents get) I get. It's still one of Knizia's final Big Game greats IMO.
UPDATE Dec 09. Well, I'm slowly getting better at this game. There are so many strategic avenues to pursue. I consider this to be one of the later Knizia classics. Rating up from 8 to 9. Might even make the coveted 10 rating in time.

The auctions are pretty tense (should I bid on the one I want or bluff so I can move to the one I want), and the sacrifice/reward/river level mechanism is really cool. But, dont forget, it's (mostly) about the pyramids. Just awesome.

Like Ra, players bid for things that have different values for each of them. On top of that, you have 3 resources to manage (farmers, pyramids, cards) that affect your game position. Looks great and plays great.

Amun-Re contains many different elements but they are balanced well enough to form into a relatively convincing whole. The theme is attractive, but of secondary importance to the game mechanics. The scoring is typically (for a Knizia design) many-stranded and leads to some tense bidding in the latter stages of the game. The only element which detracts just a little from the game me is the randomness introduced by the Power Cards.

I've played the game over 100 times and it is still a favorite to hit the table when there's five of us. The two different auctions are compelling each in their own right; together in one game it's a unique masterpiece.

A very clever auction game. Simultaneous auctions and a partial reset in the game to fix the run away leader and a tense blind auction makes Amun-Re a well crafted game. The blind auction luck is well managed because unlike other blind auctions, everyone wins something.

Fun game. Many decisions, a lot to look at, but at the same not an overwhelming amount to look at. A gamer's game for nice medium weight. I like how my brain is forced to work in this game. High replayability. Actually, the more I play this game the more I like it. The nuances and tricks of this game slowly reveal themselves. I think thats incredible. Amun-Re is 70% resource management and 30% group-think. The group-think aspect of the game is fantastic. I like games that shine when every opponenet is comfortable with the game system and competent. Amun-Re is one. For me the game scales from 5-5 players. I'm not sure how well it plays with 3 or 4, because I never play it with that number.

The sacrifice is one of my favorite game mechanics. This is why this one is a keeper. The more I play this the more I like it.

I love the interplay in the "economics" subsystem and even the blind bidding appeals to me here. Trying to set yourself up for power card bonuses, while balancing your money and competing with your opponents for bonuses is huge fun.

This title is still growing on me, especially with the SpielByWeb implementation now available. With money and # of power cards open in that implementation it changes the feel a bit and I think it makes the game even better.

I have played the game A LOT and in my opinion the game is, quite simply, marvellous. It blends various clever game mechanics, with the economic game feeling almost completely separate from, yet still integrated with the VP game. At first sight, the luck of the power card draw seems significant (and there is luck involved, to be sure), but with experience I find all the power cards useful, and extremely well balanced in their power. The game offers gutwrenching decisions almost continuously (but especially so in the province auction phase). Many German-style games are very tactical, ie. you can do reasonably well with only short-term planning, but Amun-Re is extremely strategic, so you *have* to think quite far ahead in order to do well. Highly, highly recommended. One of Knizia's best games, if not THE best.

Upgrading to highest rating after playing repeatedly on Spielbyweb.com. This game rocks. One of Dr. Knizia's best games. So mathmatically painful in the choices he gives you thru auctions for regions, building, farming and then making a sacrifice to the gods. Right up there with the best of them. Excellent interplay between players and I love the theme...very aesthetically pleasing and not that hard to teach really for a designer game..bidding is made simple by a bidding track and card management of power cards is important and challenging.

On the up side :

My favorite game of 2003, i want to play it every time i can find 5 players !
In any situation (poor, no balanced pyramids or majority) you can win !!!

I won two games with the less money at end !

On the down side :

- I don't recommend it for 3 players because you can have some nasty situations like all the poorest provinces : it makes a strange game with very little auctions and buys

- Some of my players find it too long

[2008.Feb.19] A solid Egyptian-themed Euro by Reiner Knizia; one of his (pleasantly) heavier board games. The auction and bluffing aspects make the game shine, game-after-game. Buy power cards, farmers, and pyramid stones, and then pray it goes your way during the sacrifice. I hope you were able to placate Amun-Re. Finally, just when you get the hang of it all, it's time for the 2nd half—à la the New Kingdom. Good luck bidding on your provinces!

Now go crap in someone else's weaving hut... this one is taken!

[2014.Jun.13] Awesome 5-player game. 'Nuf said.

Take the auction system from Vegas Showdown, add the basic flow of Power Grid (Auction stuff, buy stuff, get paid), throw in a sacrifice to Amun-Re, and it all adds up to a solid game. I particularly like the way the board clears midway...with all the pyramids on the board, the lands take on completely different values.

I love this game. The only thing I might consider changing is the point bonus cards... i.e. making those bonuses available to everyone and eliminating the cards. I could see that adding to the province fight (as now you're sure Player A is going to get a bonus if he/she gets Xyzyinia).

I am always ecstatic whenever this game hits the table. My favorite aspect of this one is the changing values of the provinces in the second epoch. Some other great things about this game are the sacrifice and how the provinces can/should effect it and the tight econmic flow that you need to make work for you so you can score the big points in the second half. The game really shines in all of Amun-Re's glory when every player understands what is going on and has solid play.

After several playings I am still far from developing a strategy for Amun-Re, and I mean that in a good way. There seems to be a lot of different but valid ways to approach the game. The many decisions throughout the game are both crucial and subtle. I look forward to playing many more times, highly recommended.

***UPDATE***

What the hell, this is a 10. The strategy does reveal itself after more plays. Basically this is economic infrastructure game where you're trying to convert money to investments to points.
