Only necessary to enjoy some variation. It doesn't improve the game.

A mixed bag of changes for 1830. The Reading company is strong early on, but its lack of station markers means that it soon fades, while the double station tile for Baltimore turns the Penn into a powerhouse (I suggest that the B&O and Penn should lose a station marker each to restore balance). All the above means that the early action is likely to be entirely south of New York given that the boosts for the B&M and CP are much more subtle. I'm less keen on the optional increased bank size as that means that the game is all about getting a diesel. It all illustrates just what a tough job it is to balance 1830 changes and how subtle differences can have big knock-on effects.

Repositions the company starting locations a bit, and achieves somewhat different gameplay. With Coalfields, there was too much money in the bank.

Nice, working variant. However, we do not use this regularly.

The reading doesn't add much but more competition in the already competitive south. Skip is the better move.

Rated based on the SimTex game, where you should check the "optional 6 train", "delayed obsolescence" and (optionally) "extended game" settings to play the variant as proposed by Moon. The implementation leaves out two things: the price reduction in diesels and the option for the C&A owner to take a Reading share. Also note that the corresponding Reading variant in the Mayfair edition of 1830 emulates the computer game settings, not the original expansion.

I believe the map changes are for the better; the company itself obviously provides some additional texture and another presidency; I don't use the delayed obsolescence or extended game options. With a physical copy, use the cheaper diesels and extra money if you think there cannot be too much emphasis on high-end train acquisitions.

A company to add to 1830 in one of the most crowded spots on the board. This is an interesting addition, but the 30% presidency means that you will always have investors in the other players, which can mean that your stock price is not trashed, which can make control of the Reading very powerful, even if it's dividends are not the most attractive.

Frequently accused of being unbalanced as a stand-alone expansion, but appears rather more interesting when combined with The Coalfields.

That's Tim Powers' fictional Samuel Coleridge "quoting" John Milton in _The Anubis Gates_.

--Apr2012-- I own the magazine - but haven't assembled the tiles & stock certificates for play yet. The rules deltas seem amusing, though.
