Very small, but very interesting and exciting game.
The game-mechanics is an advanced type of "storm over".

Generally, the rule is simple.
I can do better for next play.
Game balance is ok.
It is my first board wargame.

My first hardcore wargame,
I love its theme and easy-to-play style.

Grenades are horrible!

Very good for a postcard game (along the lines of Against the Odds' postcard games), with just a map with 10 zones and 18 counters. The idea of rotating counters for indicating unit's remaining action points suits perfectly and allows a much more rewarding game play than in other postcard games, too constrained by few counters and reduced space on the map.

Easy and fun to play, never more than 30 minutes.

Both sides can win the challenge !

a little and simple game about an unusual subject.
quick to play (less than 1h) and exactly what is needed to introduce a new gamer to wargame as the rules are explained in 10 minutes

Easy to play but challenging enough for many replays. Good balance and enough "chrome" to keep it interesting. Nice map and counter graphics. One to take on the road with you as it doesn't take that long to complete a game. Would like to see this on an iPad.

excellent game, on the back of Battles! Stunner.
Why? It provides excellent theme, defines a small tense struggle very well.

A fast, introductory wargame with a tiny footprint (less than twenty counters) and a bit of flavour. It an interesting situation in that it requires the Chinese to mount a fighting withdrawal whilst at the same time sustaining a last-ditch stand. The Japanese, meanwhile, get all the toys.

The rules were not very good. We had to infer a critical rule about casualties for units with no actions left. But aside from that you have a quick and bloody fight.

Nice little game, the multi-activation mechanism gives you something to think about in a very small package. Like the graphics.

Marred by what is certainly the worst English in any of Battles' rule sets so far, please have someone proofread this next time! A good proofreader could have taken all this out within an hour. (The funniest part is the omitted word "reroll". We did follow the recommendation and "canned" several dice when the MGs missed...) Also slightly bizarre, the Chinese lost in our first game because they had not had two units flee across the bridge into the International Concession... is that a gimmick to make the Chinese give up more ground? Might be indicative that the Japanese find it too hard to advance if that is needed.

Passable for a postcard wargame. Games can be close and both sides have a shot of winning. Enough here to get a second play out of it, which is more than you can wish for in a free postcard game.

Still, an awful lot hinges on initiative dice rolls (which is not so good, even for a 30-minute game). Wish there was a more clever system to determine initiative - perhaps the player with the most "unused" action points goes first next turn.

Can be played in 30 minutes. Played it twice, Chinese won and lost, so appears balanced. Key is opening few turns and keeping the Japanese from getting too close to the factory, hold C, E & D at all cost.

Bought the magazine for other reasons. Tiny game on an interesting historical incident.

Counters are clipped and stored in ziplock bags.
