Well, I'm afraid it'll have to wait. Whatever it was, I'm sure it was better than my plan to get out of this by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman round here?

D-day is a popular situation for designers but not an easy one to simulate. This game does a fair job with a quick and dirty system. It is a solid game hurt by a verbose rule book and some mistakes regarding combat and Moves. Otherwise, it is actually my favorite game on this popular but difficult to simulate subject. I believe my fellow wargamers have been much too hard on this Avalon Hill title. I'd love to see this system on division scale.

UPDATE: Sold it due to space concerns.

Acquired in purchase in February 2008. Having already owned the Smithsonian version of "Battle of the Bulge," this game was easy to learn and play. Not strictly about D-Day, nor as involved as "Battle of the Bulge," but on a grander scale, "D-Day" gives a good feel for how tough the sledding got as Allied troops approached Germany. Eventually the Germans can either dig in across their border or chance a "Bulge"-like strike against oncoming enemy units. Even though the basic game is relatively simple, it gives a feel for what this war was about, and one can certainly add on complexity by using the Battle Manual. I like it a lot. If anyone's interested, I've rewritten the basic rules into simpler English. For me the most difficult part to figure out was the rule regarding HQ units and their "holding boxes" (into which individual ground units can be placed, but which are represented by movement of HQ units). After checking every source I could find via the Internet, I finally found the pages on strategy in the game's Battle Manual to be most helpful--not only for that rule, but for set-up and first moves. The manual's comments on how to play and learn the game also are spot-on, as even the second time I played the game, I felt like I not only had a handle on how pieces should be set up and how the game should play out, but I could already see alternative strategies for the next contest. It may not be historically accurate--no roads or hedgerows on map, for example--but as a game it seems to work. The only disappointment for me was that the title suggested the game would be about the Normandy invasion, but it is not--it's primarily about the conduct of the war from Normandy to the end of the conflict in Europe. So, be forewarned on both counts.

In some respects, I like the original D-Day better. But after a few plays, I find that this version is just as tense, if not moreso...

And it still makes a great introduction to board wargaming.

Haven't played this one in a while. It was a decent intro level game, if my memory serves me correctly. I thought the mechanics and gameplay were ok. The map and components are quite aesthetically pleasing as with all the Smithsonian Edition games. I need to take a closer look at this one when I find some time.

Simple introductory wargame depicting the D-Day invasion of Europe. The rules are presented on a single sheet, along with low counter density and large hex map, to provide a nice introductory package. The companion book adds lots of historical information and variants.

I bought this game long time ago and just left it in my shelves without playing. Recently, I bought Memoir 44 and become interested in D Day once more. Therefore, I pick up this game and start learning the rules. I begin to play solitaire. Though not very interesting, I think it is still a good game.

Quick and simple corps-level treatment of D-Day to Berlin. Very nice system. Most games either allow every unit to move or place severe restrictions on movement. In this game, players are restricted in the number of units that may be moved each turn, but the restrictions are fairly generous and players can generally move most of the units that they would like to each turn. Unfortunately, the scale combined with the strong ZOCs means that this game can be quite static; don't expect to see Patton's breakout. I suspect that the game would have been much better with a larger map. Also, the victory conditions are quite bad: a draw is extremely likely.

For all its flaws, this isn't a bad game. Played with all the advanced options is best, though you have to do a few tweaks surrounding the earning of 'moves' in order to simulate the actual campaign. I allowed each side to temporarily overspend for one turn and must pay it back the next. Also relaxed the ZOC penalties a little.

The system is sound, the game play simple, but it boils down to some ambiguities that really make or break the game.

The rules though simple are lacking in clarity for the air units especially. The optional pursuit rules too makes the game play rather strangely, as it can only second attack a unit it was pursuing.

Overall, it's a land-break through(which is not that difficult) and race to the Rhine fortifications and settle down to a 10-10 dice-off situation.

The chances of killing 5 allied corps with the move-for-step-repair will make this part of the game near impossible to win for the Germans. (Unless, the allied player is doing something really wrong or had really bad luck with the dice rolls.)

Similarly, the Germans can plan to protect 1 of the major victory city and delay the Allies as much as possible to snatch a Draw from them.

Simple for beginners, an indicative and fun dicing wargame. but for experienced gamers, This is not very good.

Best aspect is compactness. Fairly decent strategy game with a somewhat "innovative for it's period" combination of units held in boxes to save space as "combined forces".
Game was the subject of a few in depth strategy articles back in the 90s and received fairly good reviews. Now a dust collector due to more recent gaming trends.

Very unusual game, with its corps system -- it favors the Allies, and gives them a very powerful attack capability. I've played this several times and don't see how the Allies can lose (if the initial invasion doesn't get crushed, that is).

The game tries some interesting things but it's ruined by the combat system. My experience was that if the Germans keep falling back when attacked, they will always be able to have a solid line and the allies will never get anywhere close to the victory locations.
