Lots of different things to do and the game with heroes feels parallel to the main game. I couldn't help feeling a bit commercial about the game: I am not so sure how well all those mechanics tie in together. The modular board is beautiful, the combat mechanics work well. I would also prefer to gain immediately resources from conquered areas and then my opponent should force me to lose income by playing the Harvest action if my income does not correspond to my areas. Lots of other ideas about the game exist, but this is one of the epic games of choice.

Runewars reminds me a lot of Twilight Imperium 3. It is not quite as involved or complex, but RW takes the same feel and distills it to a 2 - 3 hour game instead of a 6-8 hour one. Each game I have played has worked differently and seems to be dependent on what your objective(s) are, which race you use and what the board set up is. There were games where the winner was very aggressive, and games where they were able to create a fortress while they built up their rune stockpile. I like that for every victory point you get (runes), you have to be able to defend it from being stolen away. This is another great game from a great designer!

It's probably too long, but it's very good. It reminds me a lot of Nexus Ops, with a questing game laid over top of it. You really have to manage both sides and it can feel like playing two separate games sometimes. There's a lot of different cards, and my initial impression is that it may be a bit bloated, but I had an absolute blast playing this and would love to do so again. A few minor complaints in the design don't do much to diminish my enthusiasm for all the good parts.

A very good game. Compared to my other point of reference (Starcraft) for big FFG games with many plastic pieces, it is much more accessible because you don't need to plan out a path of development (which requires knowledge of how the different Starcraft technologies interact). Instead, you are responding to the cards you receive (Quest, Objective, Season and Tactical Cards), and thus it is a much more tactical game than Starcraft (which is more strategic). The influence auctions and heroes add another layer of competition which means the game is not all about conquest. The fact that you need to accommodate the runes, however, in a conquered territory means that there is a quite subtle interaction between the different elements of questing (heroes), conquest (armies) and politics (influence actions). The seasonal events are an excellent method of propelling the action, meaning you can't just sit back and turtle, and add a great deal of variety. The orders system packs much of the foreplanning of Starcraft into a much swifter and easier to teach mechanism that creates a lot of tension.

My only complaints are that I would have preferred having a whole order card devoted to moving heroes rather than just have them all move in summer; this way you would really have a clearer choice between a military and questing route to victory. The ending can also be somewhat anticlimatic, but that's mainly if the players aren't keeping track of who's been picking up the runes. Those who dislike chance disrupting their best-laid plans should also avoid, but personally I find this highly thematic and plausible.

Liked this a lot. Tremendous number of things going on. I see multiple ways to win.

Wish the heroes had more to offer though....they should move all the time.

A much stronger game than its predecessor. It still strikes me as fiddly, with a lot of working parts to it. But, once you get used to it, it flows pretty well.

Update: After a second play, bumped up to an 8.

Entertaining mixture of wargame and adventure. All in all, gameplay is AWSOME! It has tactics as well as strategy, various ways to victory and many good ideas.

The artwork, however, is cheesy, cartoonish and ugly; and unfortunarly, it's set in the super lame Terrinoth world. I also dislike most card based combat resolutions, and Runewars isn't any different. Even the 2nd edition is at a price tag of minimum 60-65 EUR (online retailers), which seems pretty high. If only I could become friends with the graphic design...

Natus likes a Konieczka design, details at 11:00.

This is the game FFG has been trying to design for a decade now and they've finally succeeded. The usual bloat of draw decks and components remains, but after the slow setup the game actually takes off and you can make interesting, meaningful choices. Still lots of nits to pick, but for once the designer created an interface that doesn't impede the players. Rating likely to rise.

The more I read about this one the more I want it.
I will definitely pick it up eventually, regardless of how expensive it is...it just looks and sounds way too cool. But, once again I have stopped myself from buying this simply because of the playing time.

It looks good but will have to wait as there are higher priority games for me out there right now!
