I was one of the playtesters for the main game and its expansion. When it became time for Nexus to do the Collector's Edition I was assigned to rewrite the rules.

It is a game with unlimited replayability. I believe this game will satisfy all Tolkien fanatics as well as those just wanting a fun game.

My favorite game is now my most prized game as well. The Collector's Edition is truly unparalleled. I can't say enough how impressed I am with it. I would set up my original copy just to admire it, doing the same with the CE is captivating. This will be equally played and put on display.

I think I must have waited longer and with more anxious anticipation and trepidation than anybody for this game. I'm a huge Lord of the Rings nut who didn't find out about War of the Ring (the original) until the Fall of 2007 when I saw it in my local game store. I had little money at the time, so it's price was too high to justify taking home with me right then and there. After reading some reviews on BGG, it sounded so incredibly awesome that I knew I had to have it regardless of the price. But there were also some rumors of a collector's edition... Better wait and see how that turns out, I thought.

Over the next year, I fell increasingly in love with War of the Ring, though I had never even played it! I read just about every War of the Ring article on BGG and read the rules multiple times. I hung on every scrap of Collector's Edition news as if my livelihood depended on it. When the Collector's Edition doubt crept in, I considered just breaking down and getting the original, but I'd already waited so long!

Nearly another full year passed with little CE news, despite my checking almost every day. If it's possible to have a favorite game that one has never played, War of the Ring was mine. Every time I had a little extra money, I would hope desperately it's release would be announced, and every time my bank account ran low I would dread it. What if I missed out after waiting so long?

Finally, it was announced. For $400. I don't know what I was expecting--something closer to $250 maybe, but when the time came to plop down $400 suddenly I began to seriously question the sanity of all of this. I mean, I had never even played this game! I had read pages and pages and pages about it, but still, I had never played it! It took 24 hours and the support of my wife to finally pull the trigger, but I did. Interminable months later, the game arrived.

If you've made it this far, it should now be clear how unfair and ridiculous were my expectations for both the game and the quality of War of the Ring Collector's Edition. But it met and exceeded them all. The production quality is through the roof: the minis are absolutely outstanding, the board is beautiful (I love the new colors and the layout is significantly improved), the cards are functional and gorgeous, and the box, while a bit unwieldy, is lavish as hell.

The game itself is all I hoped it would be and more. My biggest concern going in was that games would play out too similarly, but this is not the case at all. Thanks to the event cards, action dice, and sheer strategic diversity, every game is very different and exciting. We've had Dunlendings overrun the Shire, Elves besieging Moria, Ents liberating Helm's Deep, and Orcs in every Elven stronghold. Each game is a story in itself, and the options seem limitless.

The action dice system works great, especially if viewed as an enabling rather than a constraining mechanism. It's true that they "limit" your options, but that's where the strategy and creativity come in: building something awesome out of what you're given, and seeing the opportunity in the dice and cards to do something great.

My love of this game is certainly partly a reflection of my love of the books. But only partly, because the game itself and the quality of the Collector's Edition are spectacular.

Finally got my copy after waiting for the local store to get their order in. So far it looks great, the box is not in the greatest shape with some small damage and the game boards have some creases and dents in the mating corners. I am kind of complaining because of the costs, would like it to be next to perfect but just glad I got one. Looking forward to playing it very soon.

Played our first game and was fantastic. Makes a huge difference all painted, bigger cards, larger board and better rulebook. Can't wait till the next game.

Unbelievably gorgeous version of a game I already loved. Usability issues with the original map and cards are gone. Figures are great and work well with the other components. WHOA!!!! You see the photos, which look pretty amazing, and you read the endless rave reviews and comments, but you really don't know how truly incredible this game is until you have the tactile experience of seeing and handling it in person. I had actually decided that I would never spend over $400 on a board game. And then I saw pictures of the new board. Now that I have the game in my possession and can see the quality of the physical production (what a box!!), I realize that $400 is an absolute bargain for this game. (Thank God for cheap Chinese labour!) Sure, even as a beginner painter I could have done a better job on the figures' paint job, but it would have taken me months and months to do so. For a mass-produced game, the painting is decent and when viewed from a normal playing distance (as opposed to right in front of my nose), the figures look downright stunning. The best part about this edition is that it corrects every single concern I had with the original game, including the aesthetic concerns with the original, muddy-looking brown board. Yes, it would have been nice if they had got everything right with the first edition of the game so that I didn't have to spend all this money, but I certainly don't regret owning this game. In fact, for me it is now a perfect board game and, after all these years, it has earned my first 10/10 rating! Game design: 5/5 Personal enjoyment: 5/5 Total: 10/10!!

The absolute pinnacle of board game production and design. Stunning. Gorgeous. Massive. Oh, the game is pretty darn good too. One of the greatest games ever invented and certainly the game with the most thematic linking of subject matter and mechanics. This game plays like an epic story. The production is flawless and the second edition board is a true upgrade in terms of usability. I would play this anytime with anyone.

Everything good you have heard about this edition of this game is true: the beauty, the elegance, the stellar game play, the magnificent board, the stunning figures, the lovely cards, the compelling strategies, the brilliant combat mechanics, the subtleties and feints...it's all a masterpiece.

EDIT: after several years of playing this game, it just gets better and better. But we only play with the LotR movie score playing on the iPod. If you don't do this, something is terribly wrong with you.

I'd call WOTR a cross between Risk, the LotR Boardgame, and Star Wars: Queen's Gambit. Overall, it most closely resembles the last of those. QG is also an asymmetrical wargame where one side applies overwhelming force while the other attempts to stall long enough to complete their side quest. QG also limits your available actions each turn, but uses cards rather than dice. My wife and I really enjoy QG, but WotR is a richer, more rewarding experience.

The game is all about playing well to maximize your odds of winning the race through Mordor. The fact that you can play very well yet still lose due to bad Mordor tile draws is a plus for me, not a detriment. After all, if the endgame is determined before the end, why bother playing it through at all? However, skillful play definitely dramatically increases your odds of ultimately winning. Sometimes as the FP especially I feel like the Hunt in Mordor was tragically unfair, but upon retrospection I realize that I should have spent longer healing before plunging into Mordor. The luxury to do that, is of course provided by doing well on the military front. I really love the interaction of the military and the hunt for the ring components of the game.

I still find this game to be a new challenge each time, as the players must shape their strategies around the cards they have available, and I've not yet come close to exhausting the interesting combinations that can arise.

Plus, my wife loves the game.

I think I would be willing to pay for a fully painted set of miniatures on this one!

A few drawbacks - the die rolling here is generally exciting and fair overall. However, as with any game with dice, a string of outlier rolls can tip the game. Also, I did not find this to be playable out of the box - I had to take quite a bit of time to color the bases of the figures. The map is also a bit hard to manage sometimes, and the cardboard counter to replace the figures don't work really well. This might be inevitable, however, as I suppose the map couldn't be much bigger, and I wouldn't want smaller miniatures (or would I? Actually smaller miniatures that came in distinct colors for each nation would have been fine with me!)

Overall, my wife and I always look forward to playing this and will center weekend afternoons around it. We have managed to play games of this in under 2 hours, but in general you should allow 3-4.

UPDATE May 2011: I toyed with giving this game a 10 for a while, but in the end can't do it for two reasons. 1) It is too fiddly - I still need to hit the rulebook and FAQ every game. 2) It is either has too much of the game outcome dependent on luck, or it needs to be shorter.
Don't get me wrong, thing is an great epic game, but isn't perfect. The Collector's Edition is truly beautiful as well (although I could have done without the huge, fragile wooden box).

UPDATE UPDATE (5 whole days later): Screw it, WotR is a 10. This is one of those rare games that gives me a visceral excitement n my gut just at the thought of playing it. The game may not be perfect, but love ain't always easy.

This is by far the most incredible board game that I own. The game itself is very entertaining, and receives high marks in its original version - great figures, great mechanics, board, and artwork - and true to many aspects of the books/movie. But this edition far surpasses that high mark. It is amazing quality; I believe I have received what I paid for and more.

Large, lavish collector's edition remake of the superb War of the Ring from Nexus. War of the Ring is a superb, playable game themed on the events of the late Third Age, as Sauron is trying to force a military victory, or recover the Ring, while the Free Peoples are trying to buy enough time to get the Ring destroyed. The new edition comes in a large wooden chest, in the form of a huge book, and looks superb. The wood does feel a little soft and fragile, so handle with care. The book opens and the game components slide out in plastic, felt lined trays. The miniatures are painted (quality varies... the evil minis look very nice). The production issues from the first game are fixed with a larger map, with much clearer icons to indicate where the settlements and forts are. The new colour scheme on the map is stunning. Cards are increased to tarot size, and you can now actually read them (font size increased!). The rulebook is now hard back bound and expanded to include the rules from the expansion. All in all, large and beautiful.
------
Lovely looking game themed on the War of the Ring. Players represent the Fellowship against the Shadow Alliance. This breaks down into Elves, North, Dwarves, Gondor and Rohan up against Isengard, Mordor and Haradrim/Easterlings. Dice are tossed that generate actions, akin to being dealt a hand of cards in a card driven wargame. Actions are spent on recruiting, campaigning, playing events or on the ring game. The ring game is an abstracted journey from Rivendell to Sauron's Smithy, with Sauron dogging the footsteps and tossing corruption at the Fellowship. Sauron is trying to recover the ring or win a military victory before the ring is destroyed. The gameplay is superb. The designers obviously understand the book, as all the pressures of force and time are here, and it's been superbly developed into a balanced, thematic game. This game is a must for Tolkien fans, and worth a try for anyone else. Great effort.
