Four scenarios played so far. Excellent game, fast moving and exciting. A refinement from the earlier MEN OF IRON, which already was a very good game. Scenarios in Infidel are much more balanced and make for very tense game play. My review: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/773707/how-to-become-an-...

Infidel is the second volume in the Men of Iron series. It still uses the Men of Iron system with some rule expansions to reflect the nature of warfare during the Crusades, but the clarity of the rules has improved significantly. Certain sections have been reworded and more examples are included. However, be sure to download the most recent version of the rules and the FAQ from the GMT website.
Cavalry plays a much bigger role, resulting in a much more fluid game. Infidel introduces mounted archers. These units can move (even through an enemy zone of control), fire, and continue moving, as long as it has enough movement points, simulating the hit and run tactics of the Saracens. Mounted archers can reaction fire in both frontal hexes (effectively firing twice when both frontal hexes are occupied). The light mounted archers cannot shock attack, but they can retreat before combat against any unit. Medium mounted saracen units cannot retreat before combat against mounted units, but they can fire and shock attack in the same activation! On the Crusader side the mounted men at arms have been upgraded to knights. When knights charge, they become medieval tanks, crushing all who stand in their way. Knights never need to be in command to charge, treat Retire results as retreats, and never roll for charge reluctance. In fact, knights must counter charge when attacked unless they are in command and succeed in a resistance roll. Suffice it to say, if you were frustrated by the lack of opportunities to charge in Men of Iron, you should be very pleased with Infidel. Some who are new to Infidel might think that knights are too powerful, but play balance can be achieved once the Saracen player learns how to take full advantage of the mounted archers. Encircle the knights. Block their retreat paths with zones of control. Fire on their flank and rear and cut off retreat. If you liked Men of Iron, you'll love Infidel.

Very nice looking components, and the maps are great, all 5 of them.

After playing all six scenarios, I really enjoyed them and I am looking forward to trying them again. I am bumping this up to a 9.5 ranking!

Yogya express maning. I finally put this on the war-table with Dorylaeum first, after playing Musket and Pike this looks a bit easier on the rules. After going through Dorylaeum and Antioch, this system is one of my top rated GMT games.

More interesting scenarios than Men of Iron and the Turks and Crusaders have a wider disparity between weapons and tactics than found in the earlier game. It is a compliment to this system that it captures these differences in a concise rules set that is a blast to play.

Rating of 8 based on 2 Solo plays of Dorylaeum scenario - Captures the essence of Crusader warfare nicely.

EDIT 08-23-2013: Rating upped to 9 after several solo plays of different scenarios. This is a very fine game, with just enough chrome and historical flair to appeal to a wargamer, all the while being easy to learn and fast to play. A success that will be played in my house many more times. Seriously thinking about getting more games in the series.

Definitive hex&counter tactical wargame of the Crusades era. Enough complexity for hardcore wargamers but still very fluid to play and streamlined enough for opposed play. Scenarios seem to be quite well balanced even though each scenario presents a tactical puzzle. The momemtum roll makes each play somewhat unique and every battle tells you a different story. Infidel gives you a highly narrative feeling and it's very enjoyable to see each story unfold. One of the best tactical wargame systems I have come across.

I played it only solo, and it works wonderfully!
Rules are not so complicated: the game is suitable for unexperienced wargamers (like me...) too.
The maps are good, but the armies move often in a clear terrain: by my experience, there is not a great "terrain strategy" to do. But I think that this reflect the period warfare.
All scenarios are very different and show always a new and particular situation: so every one is interesting. And the continity/seizure system assure a new game experience at any time.
And it's really amazing to pass from the crusader side to the "infidel" one, each one with his specific warfare!

The most dynamic of the Men-of-Iron series with the focus on the tactics of the Crusaders and Middle Eastern armies. Most battles are fought on wide-open terrain with a large quantity of cavalry. This opens up a lot of tactical decisions but with it added complexity due to the higher percentage of battles that use the charge/counter-charge rules.

Infidel plays very differently than the other entries, and is a great volume in a very good series.

Provisional rating based off of 1 play (montisgard) - some concerns about scenario balance - but the game itself plays fast and smooth.

edit - upping the rating - found out I was playing some rules wrong that made the Western Knights waaaaay overpowered. Game plays quick, streamlined and does a fairly good job of simulating history without fiddlyness. Only thing I am not sold on right now is the recovery banners - these feel to abstracted for my tastes.

An improvement on MOI. Rules read better and the battles seem more balanced and more interesting. Some glaring omissions though in the list of battles for the Crusader era.

This second volume is very similar to Men of Iron, however it introduces and focuses on powerful Knight-units. These dominate the game, and are much tougher than their counterparts in Men of Iron.

There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night, and if you go no one may follow, that path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed, nor wind to blow.

Works well solo.

Ascalon solo was an easy Crusader victory.

Antioch solo turned out a very close, exciting result. A very narrow win by the Turks.

Harran solo was a reasonably close Crusader win helped by a large Turk roll on the victory check.

Aborted 2-player Ascalon, still close.

2-player Antioch was a complete blow-out with an easy Crusader victory. Muslim player (me) just struggled to activate his units.
