We played our first game as a 2-player ~ it works, but I can see a lot of advantages to playing with at least 3, and getting better with more.

There's a definite advantage to the player with the better memory... well, memory's not quite the right word, but to the player who can easily determine which cards are in play when they are the leader.

Even with that aspect minimized, we still had fun with this.

The game as published is really hollow! Which is a shame because the artwork is beautiful and some of the mechanics are really intriguing. It had so much potential and has always fell flat! Initial rating is a 4.

*Update: I have been seeking a way to revamp some of the mechanics and make the game enjoyable...now I've thought of something that everyone loves! By changing some of the character selection and game play mechanics, everyone now really loves the game! It bumps up from a 4 to an 8.5!

Only one play so far, but I enjoyed it. Comparisons to Citadels are to be expected. I like Citadels, and like this, perhaps even more than Citadels (but that could be just because it's new - the novelty).

I think this game is great for a few reasons: I was into steampunk before all these losers made me hate it(why the crap are zombies in steampunk?!), it's different to not always be attacking someone else and the artwork(as usual for AEG) is amazing!

Entertaining and a bit silly. Though my girlfriend and I quickly ruled that 2 of the characters were ALWAYS airsick as they felt 100% worthless every time we got them.

You and your fellow players have a common enemy, the Emperor. Each player is aboard a zeppelin trying to sabotage the Emperor's plans by throwing precious cargo off the zeppelin. Each turn players are randomly dealt one traitor, then they get to select one from among the remaining traitors. Each traitor has a color and an ability. The First Player will roll 3 dice; traitors whose color was rolled will be able to throw cargo off the zeppelin, if they can afford to bribe the guards.

Each player will play their two traitors, one at a time, activating their abilities if they choose. Each traitor will have the opportunity to steal one gold from the safe on the zeppelin and to grab a piece of cargo. Each piece of cargo will have a cost, in gold, that will need to be paid in order to throw it overboard, and that cost is also the points it is worth. Games last until someone reaches a set number of points.

During the game players must decide which traitor to choose based on what cargo they have in their hand and the traitor that was randomly dealt to them. There is a fair amount of luck at play in the game, and the skill to win lies in a careful balance between making the best of the cards dealt to you, and making a good selection.

If you could take the best parts of this and Citadels and mash them together you would have one outstanding game. Unfortunately you don't. I like the option of more characters in this one, but the characters are more streamlined in Citadels. Mad Zeppelin definitely needs a character like the Thief in Citadels.

The poor man's Citadels. A bit of tweaking could have made this a great game, but the role selection is weaker and therefore I think it's not as good as Citadels.

There is a good game in here. I read the rules and there seemed to be a lot of holes. Then read the variants. I am currently using the spiderfinders86 variant in the "character card selection" variant post. Made a few more tweaks and haven't yet added the extra cards made by sf86. Shows a lot of promise as a light "take that" game.

Have yet to try to orginal rules - maybe soon!

Have only played with 6 so far, and felt like that was too much. Lots of dependency on knowing the ability of the characters, which is a bit rough, but I like the general idea of the game. I need more plays to say for sure, preferably with less people.

Fun enough. It's very similar to Citadels, this is true, but they did address several of my complaints with Citadels so it's an interesting change-up. Sure the theme makes little sense in places, and I did have to go through an email chain with the designer to shore up some pretty unfulfilling rules, but it's okay.

Random game with lots of rules holes which I bought because of the theme and the drafting mechanic. Mad Zeppelin is all about attempting to predict the actions of your opponents, with shades of Go Fish. As such, I'd rather play Roborally or RAMbots.

Similar to Citadels, using role selection each round to eek your way to victory. However, it doesn't click as fast as Citadels, a few more plays to become familiar with the character abilities is needed.

My number 1 rule of thumb is that games with 'crazy', 'mad' or similar in the title should be avoided as a sign that randomness has been mistaken for creativity - and I read those adjectives as synonyms for 'annoying'. Unfortuneately this didn't break the trend, though it's far from the worst offender.

The game makes a weak first impression because of the similarity to Citadels and the massive downtime (though playing with six new players was probably not the best idea). However, the design is solid, if highly derivative. The artwork is gorgeous. If you like games that have characters with special powers (say, Citadels and Ruse & Bruise and Meuterer) you're very likely to like this game.

A couple of oversights in the product: The large part of the rulebook that is dedicated to character's background could have been better used by going into details about the character's interactions with each other, etc. The rulebook should definitely have been clearer.

A strange oversight which turns out to be very annoying (if easily remedied) is that the cheat sheet they went through the trouble of including doesn't list the characters' colors on it. Did they think people would just KNOW this arbitrary information? It's an important part of the decision making, knowing the colors. Just ridiculous.

Its basically a Citadels variant. Its not as clean as Citadels, but it does make one improvement as the players gain one coin and one card for the most part, so the lack of a possibility of a card drought at the end of game which can occur in Citadels is not present. I am a giant Citadels fan, and can't see myself getting that into this. Several more plays and familiarity with the roles will help, but I think seven is my max rating and its downhill from here.

The roles are much more versatile, which I think it is a negative. The straight forward nature of the roles in Citadels gives the think/doublethink much more gusto.

Second play: Its okay if Citadels is not around to play, but Citadels does more with less.

Best thing about the game is the graphics which is why a bought this card game.

Huge luck factor makes it a light filler game. Not a family game however, because crates of alcohol give benefits.

12 characters are selected similarly to Citadels, and some of their abilities are reminiscent as well. However, there is a little more memory & deduction needed to use these characters well. This slowed the game down a little.

This game is for 2-6 players, but because of the character selection process and their abilities, I definitely don't like the 2-player game. It's a 20 minute game with 2, but an hour with 6.

The box is another nice compact one (a potential travel game) about the size of Red November, so it respects shelf space.

The character reference cards are incomplete, and during the second game I added their color-coded location on the ship.

I'm lukewarm on the game and found it a little boring. So, as great as the graphics are, and as nicely compact as the game is, it's not enough to keep it on my shelf.

What a lovely looking cardgame with gorgeous artwork. Gee I sure love the theme, lets try it out shall we? Oh... its just a terrible terrible rip off of Citadels.

For a game thats derived almost entirely off a decent game you would think they would be able to invest atleast a little time balancing things or improving on it. This did neither, it's a huge downgrade from it's predecessor. Compared to Citadels or Mission Red Planet it just doesn't stand up in comparison. I found myself longing to just quit and play Citadels. I mean, theres design flaws with the character choices that potentially results in you being crippled for your turn. Turns have longer down time. The cheat sheet that they provided doesn't tell you the single thing it should, the colours. Meaning it serves no purpose other than to reference their precious little characters.

The production is however extremely high, the card and component quality is good. The cartoony steampunk art is simply delightful and immediately draws one in. But the game itself is worth being thrown overboard. If your going to rip off some mechanics, hide it or do it well.

Oh, 'Mad Zeppelin', how you have let me down!

I do enjoy this game, as do a few of my play group, but it IS, sadly, an overall let down. The AWESOME theme does not match the game mechanics at all and it can be difficult to get into the swing of things if you have not memorized all the characters' special abilities.

It's a real toss-up as to whether I'll organize some house rule reference cards to streamline the game a bit more or just pitch it.

For now, it comes out rarely and mostly just gathers dust on my shelf.

Stay away unless you know what you're getting into.
