There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night, and if you go no one may follow, that path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed, nor wind to blow.

To seek the sacred river Alph, to walk the caves of ice, to break my fast on honey dew and drink the milk of paradise... I had heard the whispered tales of immortality, the deepest mystery, from an ancient book I took a clue.

Nice production on a late-war WWII siege battle. An area movement war game; gives it a nice "Storm over Arnhem" or "Streets of Stalingrad" kind of feel. If you liked those games or have any interest in the 100 days Siege of Budapest, get this game. The period map of the city of Budapest alone is worth the price. Nice chrome in the rules too. A tense playing war game worth playing.

A very good simulation of the urban fighting in Budapest. As the Germans/Hungarians do you hold the perimeter for as long as you can or do you fall back to the denser urban areas with their higher adverse terrain modifiers? It's the classic "trade space or time" question. Russian air and artillery bombardments will take a steady toll on the German/Hungarian defenders.

The game is designed for two players, but as the German/Hungarian player, you will be basically hunkering down, with few counterattacks so you can preserve your forces for as long as possible. I see this as an excellent solitaire game.

The map is evocative and accurate. Excellent counter graphics. Rules are clear with few errata. The game flow is smooth and you will not be referring to the rules often. After playing this, you will have a good appreciation of what is like to take a major city and what is it like to defend one against heavy odds.

Rating based on solo play. I'm waiting for an occasion to play properly with human enemy but the game takes a lot of time.
Moreover, I’m used to 12h wargames but this one gave me a real headache – the game is just massive. I’d love to play it with little houserule adjustments but it’s hard to test them if you can play the game only once a year. A small chit pull system would greatly improve the game in my opinion.

My comment might sound too negative for my high rate, but I really enjoyed it, it was overhelmingly epic.

One of the bloodiest engagement n WWII. There are many things to tell. A mechanical and traditional hex based game system. I like it.

beautifull game. Why they did not used the standard "storm over" rules???????
It is getting messy and complicated because combats are long

Standard area-movement game, but too much die rolling in combat makes it go on too long for what it's trying to achieve.

The map depicts the town of Budapest with its suburbs during winter 1944-'45. It is divided into areas. The Soviet player with its ally – the Romanians - are trying to terminate the Axis’ troops (Germans & Hungarians) presence in the city. This is a siege game, the Axis player can do little to avoid the inevitable but by preserving forces has the chance to delay his fall and the plans of his adversary and in doing so he alters the victory conditions. No matter how many losses the Soviet takes he has enough troops to achieve his goal. Rules are plain. The core of success is the use of tactics by providing mutual support of planes, artillery and tanks to the most pressed branch, the infantry. Unfortunately, on each game turn there is not enough support to cover all areas of Budapest. Interesting subject. Suitable for solitaire play.

Beautiful map and interesting topic with a system that's not quite Storm Over Arnhem or Monty's Gamble as the combat system is much more involved. Yes,, the situation is hopeless for the German/Hungarian player, but you can win on victory points. My biggest problem is that the game is definitely a grinding, area by area, block by block bloodbath, which is actually a pretty realistic portrayal of the actual battle. A good game, but set aside at least six hours for your first play.

The combat procedure takes too long time and not so exciting.

The map is really cool.
The article of WW2 pocket battles is really interesting.
The magazine is worth to purchase. But, the game is not so good.
