I'm the designer of Eminent Domain, so of course I rate it a 10. That is not a shill rating. Yes, I am biased toward the game I made. I am also biased toward all games I like and rate highly.

I'm very happy with how Eminent Domain has come out. You can read my Designer Diary about it for some neat background info.

This game is simply great. After 28 plays I upgraded my rating from a 9 to a 10. Each time I play I just like it more and more.

Short version: Absolutely love this game. Easily my favorite card game.

Long Version: read my review of EmDo here for my thoughts on what makes it tick.

An Overdue Review [emphasis on EmDo vs Dominion]

Update: I'm finally able to put into words one of the things I really like about this design. The point scoring is largely incremental, meaning you will generally gain a few points at a time. There will not often be huge turns where you do so much that you vault out to a huge lead. This game rewards consistent efficiency rather than a couple big moves and that's a focus I really appreciate, especially in a deck building format.

My favorite deck builder, because of the very high strategy/skill as opposed to luck elements. There is random, but it's reduced to the point where it's still very skill based. Maintaining memory of your deck's contents is critical.

Genius! Great compilation of role selection, deck building, empire/civ building, and space! Very cool and streamlined! This varies from the solitaire feel when you really fight for the Tech cards. Seth Jaffee does it again, with Gavan Brown and others doing the graphics and artwork. I really really really like and enjoy this game !! Good vanilla, and with expansion.

Plays great as a 2 player game, but it does better with 3 or 4. The Bonus Planets are cool. I haven't played with the victory promo, but I will most definitely try it out when I can obtain one.

I prefer Eminent Domain over San Juan, and Race for the Galaxy. I love Eminent Domain as much as I love Glory to Rome, and 51st State.

While this game will be compared to Dominion and Race for the Galaxy, it's truly its own game. It also looks gorgeous.

Update: After a dozen plays I'm loving the game even more. I even played against Dr. Mayhem at BGGCon 2011!

Saying this game is "Race for the Galaxy meets Dominion" is accurate but undervalues it's worth. Eminent Domain is a strong, elegant game that stands on its own. I might still play Dominion, but I will never play Race over Eminent Domain.

Eminent Domain is direct. The ease of play and limited choices help focus your strategy without clogging it up with too many choices, too many icons, or too much text. My favorite deck builder. Eminent D6 Solitaire

This is probably my favorite game. This single box contains as much rich and multi-faceted deck-building variety as an entire roster of Dominion expansions, and that is a testament to wonderful game design. While EmDo is also expanding, each of the expected releases opens up entire new avenues within the game, rather than another "more of the same" collection of cards. I was actually so impressed with this game that I tracked down the designer to say "thanks!" and ended up becoming a part of the subsequent play testing team. But don't let that bias color what I'm saying here too much; EmDo is an absolutely brilliant game. Give it a spin.

Fans Of San Juan and Race for the Galaxy will find more deckbuilding, hand management, and role choice mechanics here. The gameplay of this offering brilliantly splits the difficulty of information to manage between the two similar games mentioned. This is the game that Race for the Galaxy could have been. More paths to victory than are available in San Juan, Less overwhelming than Race for the Galaxy.

Likes: A quick, high-depth game with pretty simple mechanics. With the following and dissenting mechanic, there is almost no downtime during the game as everyone plays on others' turns. Smooth game play and good theme.

Dislikes: The only thing I can see happening is that it might start to lose replay value after many, many plays since setup and other 'variables' are static.

YES YES! More Seth Jaffee! I love this game! Will always play it if asked and will offer it up to play A-LOT. One of my most played games of 2012.

The "following" mechanic is a brilliant way to add interaction into a game, but to not have it be "take that" or just dull attacking, or stealing/destroying resources from other players. The deck building is only there as much as it needs to be, and not thrown in just to get on the band wagon. The game has a touch of puerto rico, so some parts may feel familiar, but it will be a very unique experience for sure.

The tech cards are really fantastic, and the whole game just flows well and seems to have been play tested well.

Can't say enough about this zippy little game - really, just great.

Oh, and awesome art too.

My wife and I haven't been able to stop playing this since we picked it up. It's an excellent deck building/role selection that allows for multiple paths to victory. It's been said that it suffers from group think in larger player counts, but this will go away once players are more experienced with the game.

I absolutely love this game. It's got just enough complexity for the base game and if you need to you can ramp it up for people that want more using the expansion. I've taught this to probably 20+ people now and most people seem to enjoy this one. MUCH easier to get to play with people than my favorite game Race.

My favorite Deck Builder. Itches the same scratch as Race for the Galaxy, without the oppressive learning curve.

A 4X (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate,) in deck building form? Indeed! I love this game. It scratches the same itch as Race for the Galaxy, yet is far easier to play and it's name doesn't get confused for some kind of interstellar gran prix.

My only complaint is that I don't get to play it more often.

Terrific game. Enough variety in cards and diversity in paths to victory to keep me coming back after many plays. The pieces are beautifully produced as well, though I do recommend downloading extra upgrade player aids so you don't need to depend on the back cover of the rule book. Also scales well from 2 to 4 players.

This game is easy to teach but hard to master. At first the games end to quickly but then your figure out who to extend the game with your strategy. Every time I play I try something different.

Great deck-builder. The buildup of role cards is a great mechanic, and trashing is often the difference between winning and losing.

I think an expansion with more tech cards (allowing you to pick a random set of techs) would greatly help this game, as there is nothing stopping you from running the same strategy every single time.

This is an amazing card game and the components are out of this world! The games tend to be really tight and competitive and even young kids can pick up on the strategies pretty quick. The ability to piggy back off what other players do on this turn really keeps you involved the whole time. I love that you can succeed going heavy tech, resource, military, or colonizing a ton of planets. The space theme definitely comes through as well. All around, just a fantastic game in every aspect.

I really enjoy this game. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 was that I think you have to lock in a strategy pretty early on, and if someone else is going for that strategy as well, it can limit your choices.
