A jolly good little game, which gives an excellent feel for the battle. Nice morale system and a good sense of the mis-matched forces and of the importance of armour in the desert. My only reservation is that the result is often decided by the dice in one or two critical tank vs tank fights.

Extremely tense company/battallion level simulation of the attempted escape of the Italian 10th Army from a British trap in 1941 North Africa. Probably takes four hours to play rather than two, if the players put any thought into it. Best of the GDW 120 Series games.

Straight forward wargame. I like the period so am a bit biased. Situation is more interesting for the British player than the Italian one.

Next to 1941, probably the best of GDW's Series 120 Games. The game depicts the climax of Wavell's 1941 offensive in the Western Desert that bagged Marshal Graziani's entire Italian 10th Army. It's a race to see if the Brits can reach the hamlet of Beda Fomm first, and then hold off the desperate attempts by the Italians to break through the blocking position and reach freedom. Tense game play, right down to the last turn.

Simple, elegant, unique system that brings to life a very assymetric battle. One problem is that the game is more tense than it was in real life: although the Italians did come close to breaking out, it is almost impossible to conceive of a Britsh player suffering as few casualties as the British did in those two days (9 dead, 15 wounded).

A real puzzle for both sides and a gem of a competitive game.

Playing BEDA FOMM is like playing the old video game SPACE INVADERS. The Brits have a handful of units to eliminate dribbles of Italian units coming down from the north which quickly turns into a torrent. While CombeForce gets reinforcements, sustained combat takes a toll on the Brits and it can get really dicey in the endgame to determine whether or not the Italians can get enough off the board for a win. Great fun!

I played this against Frank, in his basement apartment in Bloomington? Normal? when it first came out, when I was letting GDW playtest my Sturm nach Osten for possible publication. I was the Italians, and he enjoyably beat me.

Back at Augustana College, in the summer of 1971 on a cool, empty floor of North Hall, I believe, Frank and I had played my revision of just-out S&T France 1940 by John Prados. I couldn't stand the CA combat result, and we used my revised CRT, and *I* won.

For the next day, he invited me over to his student apartment to play his single-factor-reduction revision of Avalon Hill's Afrika Korps, and he played the Germans and guess who won *his* revision. :-)

We designers (also) design games so we can have some slim hope of winning a game, now and then, but we still get beaten by experienced players, and our only real hope is playing other players in our own games. :-)

Playable and small on a battle that tends to be ignored in a time frame that is ignored, e.g. Italian army in WWII sans Rommel & the Afrika Korps
