Gorgeous card game from Ignacy Trzewiczek. Post-apo theme, economy engine building. Best with 2 players.

Le livret de règles est vraiment mal foutu. Pourtant la mécanique tourne bien et le jeu est relativement simple. J'aime beaucoup l'univers. Il y a plus de choix qu'à RFTG donc les tours sont plus longs.

Whoa !! Super Cool Slow Building, Post-Apocalyptic Resource and Hand Management Card Game by Ignacy Trzewiczek. Cards have multiple uses. Lots of decisions. Almost puzzle-like in order to accomplish tactics.

NOT A GATEWAY GAME !! Learning curve. Lots of icons. Complex-ish rulebook. Beginners will think "I don't know what to do".

This Polish gamer (me) understands and loves this fiddly slow building AWESOME game from Poland !!

Bits could be bigger and more abundant. Faction contracts could be on a mini-board.

We try the Blue Steel 2-player variant of no extra VP for Leader Replacement.

2 Player Review:

Action-packed would be the best way to describe this clever card-game. I've never had a deck of cards make me feel like every decision and more precisely, when that decision is made, have so much weight. Sequence and timing is pivotal as you build up your post-apocalyptic empire. It's on the verge of being too long for what it is, but as each round grows in length, so too do the weighty choices and exciting possibilities. Some of the combos you can pull off by the end of the game are extremely satisfying.

Pros:

- The heaviest and most satisfying card game I know.
- The sense of escalation is top notch.
- Great mechanism of using another's cards, promoting some interaction.
- Lots to manage, lots to plan for. (A pro if you're into that like I am). haha.

Cons:

- It's the longest card game I've ever played by far, often taking around the 90 minute mark.
- Lots of tiny rules in true Ignacy fashion, but they all just make sense.
- The Iconology can put a lot of people off the game, as there is A LOT of it here, and not all of it makes sense at first glance.
- There is a rather strong element of "luck of the draw" here, however assigning cards as invasions, contracts or locations, helps mitigate this a lot.

Difficult to learn and get all the rules right, but this is the kind of game that gets better with every play: the balance, the speed of the game, the choices, the strategies that unfold: it just keeps improving, in stark contrast to so many other games that give a good first impression but cannot hold up to repeated plays.

Wow! 1st play comment. (Autumn 2011) In-depth card game. Rounds are drafting - producing - actions - score vps - clean up.

Everyone starts a post-apocalyptic (Neuroshima Hex) U.S.A. base card and utilizes faction actions to place cards in their tableau. Each card (locale) may either be conquered, negotiated or incorporated within the territory and confers distinctive benefits for the choices.

Greatness!

Plenty of tactical and strategic choices combined with an excellent theme (and cool artwork) make for the kind of card game I enjoy the most. Feels well-tuned and balanced. The iconography is decent and the game, while difficult to grasp at first and tricky to teach, flows wonderfully. The main negative is the score track printed on the back of the box.

Own the 7 card promo expansion.

51st State is a game that I knew that I had to have. I am a huge fan of Ignacy Trzewiczek's Stronghold and I was really interested to see what his next game design would hold. It has not failed to engage and impress me. It is a shame that a few production problems have marred the game from being the biggest RftG killer right from its first production. However, the gameplay here is fully engaging and there is a lot of strategic depth to playing the factions efficiently and working off of their starting strengths. There is no loss in gameplay from playing with 2 players or playing with 3 or 4. The factions are asymmetrically balanced and the options that each card presents offer a lot of options and a lot of variety in replayability, and this is not even mentioning how expandable the game stands to be for the future. This is easily one of my favorite games to have played in 2010 (even if it was a bit of a chore to get it into my collection finally). I am eagerly looking forward to Ignacy's next game, but not before he puts together an expansion or two for this game first.

We love this game. Slightly similar feel to RFTG but there are more dimensions involved in 51st State necessitating more decisions and as such it is a more satisfying game. Great art work and nice components. We would be very interested in the sequel but it introduces PVP - shame.
Have purchased Winter though!
