Japan - an interesting new board, without radically changing the game.

Russia - nice twist with the power plant market. Fun map.

These two boards are the best variants so far. The Russian rule of eliminating the lowest plant if someone passes helps to speed up the game. Japan has a very interesting board. The two networks and different availability of the cities can make city building require more thought.

Based on Japan play. You can have two networks and all cities arent the cookie cutter 10/15/20. Makes connecting cities really interesting.

I quite like the Japanese map, it can be quite brutal, especially if you fail to snag a secondary starting point.

Russia is also interesting with the reduced power plant market.

The one free teleport + constrained start cities in Japan is a clever mechanic; this is an unfriendly map well-designed to break the players across the spine of the mountains.

Japan: the resources here are the tightest of any map if you play with the standard deck of power plants. With the expansion power plants, a lot of the tension goes away.

Japan: Makes a 3-player game enjoyable. There are many cities restricted to only 2 players and the second network both provide actual strategy to this aspect of the game with so few players.

Russia: Extremely fast game. The new power plant rule usually benefits the group as its more likely to remove the lowest plant than in the base game. Opposite of Japan, this makes the 6-player game more enjoyable. As EVERYONE is clamoring over one another.

Only played Japan so far. The new map gives a little variation. I like the two networks, makes it possible to still have a chance if you get cornered in in one location. Felt like resource hogging was more important than other expansions I've played.

As Funkenschlag-fanboy it hurts me to say some negative about these maps, but to me this expansion is one huge missed opportunity to bring the esthetics to a new level.
What is wrong? Japan doesn't look like Japan and Russia doesn't look like Russia. Granted, both are very long countries and the solution to respectively cut off Hokkaido and put it next to Japan's mainland seems logical, and so is the decision to cut off much of Siberia. No cities to be found there, anyway. But the problem is that the recognizability of both countris is destroyed. The solution sounds as easy as exciting: make this a 6-fold board instead of a 4-fold. Imagine Japan in its full length, seahorse shape and Russia in its typical Mercator projection where the north is much more compressed. Als there'd be a spot for Wladiwostok and Magadan.

Only played Russia. It was extremely fun, but has the potential to change the game dynamics to an extreme level. With the smaller market it is more likely that a higher level power plant can make it to the current market. Still fun and I hope for more future expansions.

The biggest difference when playing with the Russia map is that there are fewer power plants in the current and future markets. Instead of 4 and 4, it's 3 and 3. This has the effect of allowing higher numbered power plants on the market earlier in the game. It's a variant on the rules that one could probably use with other maps, but the Russian layout is interesting enough anyways.

My favourite of the two maps is Japan. It really plays with the cities and how they are laid out. Some cities can only be built in on the first and second steps, whereas others can only be built in the second and third steps. And also, you can start a second separate network once during the game. These differences make for a much different play experience from all the other maps. The only thing I don't like about the Japaneses map is that they chose to split into two with the northern most island of Japan located in a box situated over the rest of the island. A really poor design choice. I wish they had sized the island so it had fit without having to split it into two.

I think maps are worth having for Japan alone.

Japan: This map is a little strange in that you can have two starting cities, but you have to share them with other players. As a result, wherever you are, you're trying to expand from the same place as someone else. Later on it doesn't matter as much, but early on, this is an interesting twist.

Russia: Have not tried yet.

Played Japan map: Very interesting map, with not a lot of room to move. The possibility of starting a separate networks makes for some interesting decisions, especially early on.

Played Russian map: Wow. this is a whole diff'rent game right here. The rule twists make sure that *all* of the power plants melt as if under a strong sun and pushes the third phase faster than usual (our initial play did not even see a second phase!). Very interesting and makes for a shorter game.

Great expansions, not for the maps themselves but for the rules associated with them.

Knowing the game quite well, just looking at the connection cost, we knew that the game would be a long one. Nonetheless, it's an exciting map.

With so much low cost connection, Russia is a very short game playtime wise...but the old stations staying in the game put a twist that is unexpected.

Welcome to the World of Power Grid!

9 for Japan : Once again Funkenschlag has an expansion that's worth more than playing. After two rounds I wasn't in the race for winning, but eventually I finished second. That's what so great about this game (and most of it's expansions), there's always a change to comeback. We've played it with six and it was heavy and thrilling till the end. Another reason to praise funkenschlag : it's good with any number of players.
