Well, I'm afraid it'll have to wait. Whatever it was, I'm sure it was better than my plan to get out of this by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman round here?

Excellent! Uncle Martin did it again. The deck building element provides countless strategic possibilities which are also intuitive and in accordance with the theme. This is one of the best wargames I've played, along with Hannibal and Washington's war.
The board lacks some needed visual aids (e.g. about what each location would yield) and it also confuses a bit about if some areas are connected or not, but it looks beautiful and it works fine.
A great deal of strategies to try and explore. What an original use of the deck building mechanic in a wargame. This is the first and only of its kind!

Congratulations Mr. Wallace. you did it again.

edit: second play. my opinion has shifted dramatically to: excellent! (again ) each choice in this game is skillfully and subtly intertwined with every other thing. There won't be another one like it. It's not a trend.

Very evocative of the entire pre/post F&IW period. Dominion card mechanism is perfect fit into this historical wargame.

There is a minor rules tweak by Wallace in the rules forum that addresses a balance issue.

This game TOTALLY ROCKS.

Hands down, the best two player game I have ever played. Experienced players can finish in about an hour.

It's deep, yet not overly complex, and, like most Wallace games, the theme is so seamlessly integrated with the mechanics, you get the feeling that the most effective way to win is to transport yourself to the time and place.

I hope it inspires other designers to take deck building in new directions. Dominion, Thunderstone, etc. are now dead to me. Okay, not dead, I still like them a lot, but they're appetizers. This game is the meal.

Like the scene in Ratatouille when the critic eats the dish that changes the way he thinks about food - this game raises the bar for deck building and two player games in general.

Update after many online games on Yukata. Still my favorite 2 player game. Just keeps getting better. Perfect blend of strategy and tactics. Still by far the best use of the "deck building" mechanic.

The only way to make this game better is to give me an iPad version.

Update after even more plays. This is still my favorite game. So much better than the fussy, overwrought, overly-long, Twilight Struggle in the deeper 2 player game category. As far as I'm concerned, there is AFAOS, and then everything else.

Regarding the Halifax Hammer - I don't know anybody who actually plays the game that considers it a problem. As of now, I've played 145 times on Yucata; it's a completely overblown non-issue and a friggin' shame that one of the best games of all time was maligned from the start by a bunch of naysayers who never even played, otherwise they'd realize that the only time you would ever go through the rote, scripted, exploit is to prove it's broken.

Again... other than to prove that the exploit exists, there is no reason to ever do it. The other player would know immediately what you were trying to do, and what you'd be trying to do is prove a point - the point being, you're a jerk who just wasted a half hour instead of playing a game. Also, after the first two turns, if you don't pursue it step by step, precisely and by rote, it won't work.

The one time I executed a Halifax Hammer, I literally sat there with the script of how to do it that I'd printed out, paying careful attention to each move - it was not unlike the time I time I had heard that if you play Dark Side Of The Moon to coincide with the beginning of The Wizard Of Oz it matches up; kind of a weird novelty I had to try myself to see if it actually worked... definitely not something I'd ever feel compelled to do more than once. So here's how to "fix" the problem - don't do it!

Very nice design. Different possible strategys work and make a high replay value. Playing time is between 1.5 and 2.5 hours.

The somewhat flawed German rules are the weakest point of the game.
